Deserts of Ice

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Rapidly reaching the “no turning back” timetable, climate change, with all its frightening potential, remains for many a fictitious political malady. It’s time the deniers stopped thinking all is well. (image by OECD)

Poem Artwork

Deserts of Ice

A beginning of such languid calm
becomes a trickle of moisture,
eventually a frozen tundra slowly disappearing,
consequences denied by greed’s blind determination.

Still…

Being but human,
even as evolution affords porous absorption,

pride in ignorance reaches its maximum for many.

Where does such a self-inflicted denial go?

Beneath consciousness lurks gathering momentum,
rising to overflowing levels without restraint.

Nature fights such disruption…

Ignoring distant shores,

deniers cling to yesterday’s floatation,
a shallow body of existence knowing only to consume,
and then consume some more.

Why does such a group of mankind
choose cynicism over hope,
contempt over reality’s clarity,
arrogance over humbleness?

Certain people…

So non-human are they,
Remaining ill-equipped to understand
the amorphous origins of our weeping universe,
the cosmic simplicity of its needs,

and the patience it exercises with Time,
that they can't see the wisdom inherent in its lessons?

Such phenomena…

Comes from a world of cumulus billow,
moisture in all its forms
gifting our species with
terrestrial tears,
rain,
streams,
rivers,
oceans,
glaciers,
climate,
all imbued with the Universe’s
natural harmony.

Yet, undeniably…

Many remain trapped in cosmic illiteracy,
wallowing in a plethora of denial,
creating a quintessential nescience,
while Earth maintains its determination
to ward off the immutable drought,

followed by Antarctic-like deserts of ice.

Of particular interest in this poem is your invocation of "cosmic illiteracy", a phenomenon most peculiar to our own age where so many people have freely given up the traditional mindset and replaced it with a profound sense of oblivion. So well stated, as you wrote, "wallowing in a plethora of denial", in the face of impending "deserts of ice."

This stanza, you answered well…

"Why does such a group of mankind
choose cynicism over hope,
contempt over reality’s clarity,
arrogance over humbleness?"

My answer? So-called, civilization, has allowed those with weak, un-survivable genes to flourish because they no longer had to be very intelligent to survive long enough to have many children, often through inbreeding practices resulting in the majority of humans today without good reasoning power for their own survival. Highly dependent upon a civilized, but very politicized, environment where they get their sustenance in a "trickle-down" fraction and are happy sucking on that tit.

Who are they to call those of us who understand with a liberal education rather than a occupation training, like most of our founding fathers, communists and wasteful?

Ron
