Finality's Coda

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Our society has made legacies a financial ending to life. What will you leave behind? Where’s your success evidence? Well… there’s more to one’s final sum total than money, and if there isn’t, then long lasting and meaningful legacy gifts, as we know them, is a fraud. (Image by Pinterest)

Finality’s Coda

To smile with one’s last breath,

Is to have lived with principles found or created

That made a continuum of honorable contributions

To the health and well being of Nature and our species.

What greater gift…

Than to leave behind to loved ones and strangers alike

Motivation to live the life they long to experience,

To imbue their surroundings with realms of love and kindness blooming,

Igniting a beacon of bright shining love

Too guide them through the darkened nights

Of lucid dreams of failure

And into a further addition to the tapestry weave

Of completion.

Instilling caution of thought and action,

Even as the momentary touch of currency thrills,

Remaining conscious that such wealth

Often fades like a fleeting mirage

Vanishing quickly from livelihood

To slavehood.

And what of this craze to build wealth of gold,

While throwing away opportunities to be of real worth,

Where love and kindness leave indelible marks,

Where the touch of compassion

Heals wounds that make hearts weep,

While obliterating the condescending nature of separateness.

How harmonious…

Leaving one coda of existence,

Accepting that another sublime iteration awaits,

Knowing one’s creative pen and baton

Will further the never-ending orchestration of your own

Unfinished symphony.

I agree with you about leaving material things to others as your legacy. While they may create a memory, in time they will be forgotten. Or to leave only children who will be fodder for the machine that runs the moneymakers and nothing more. Perhaps hoping that one of your progeny will rise up above the ordinary, but probably not.

I fully agree with your idea of an unfinished symphony that would be picked up later on. That's the kind of legacy that I want to leave. Some work of mine that encourages an artist in the future to want to continue along that vein.

I remember getting a call from a doctoral student in Alabama who said that he wanted to base his doctoral study on my dissertation. But he also told me that his doctoral advisor told him that he couldn't do it. It's hard to find now on ERIC, the national Education Resource Information Center, and only 5 copies in hard back version exist. Most of them have been trashed by my committee members who have passed on before they left this coil.

The end's beginning completely precludes any final end, just as the eternal search for fulfilment precludes any notion of true completion. I tend to favor (and savor) the message of your final stanza, since the notion of resurrection, rebirth, reincarnation, call it what you will, seems to be imbedded into nature as a sign to be witnessed and internalized. Just ask winter if it looks forward to spring, how patiently the skeletal trees await the budding of their leaves in this never-ending orchestration of your own unfinished symphony.

"To smile with ones last breath" is something I explored in my poem "Gone Too Soon." IMO, The way you employ the word 'iteration' in your last strophe hints at reincarnation, or the rebirth of souls into different bodies. 'Animism' and reincarnation seem to be symbiotic in ancient cultures, and in new age and witchcraft. Animism attributes spirits and souls to inanimate and living things. In this belief system, souls are said to enter or exit a certain body when the body is ‘alive’ and ‘dead’ respectively. After departure, the soul then takes the form of a spirit and waits for the next ‘container’ that will host it. An insidious deception that many buy into. Your mention of legacies: If people had any kind of a clue about what the 21st judgement is going to do during Daniel's 70th week, they would understand that all human legacies will cease to exist. Your propensity to encourage thought is your best gift. Thank you for sharing. Peace. rlc
