Mirrors

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Sometimes recalling observations eerily feels like one's own hard-core-reality waiting in the wings for its entrance. But, hey, there’s nothing like getting older, knowing the past is there like an improvisational challenge… just waiting to be performed. (Image by pinterest)

Mirrors

Bathroom mirrors…

Shaving,
Old has time to think,
It lives clumsily,
Needing rail anchors in the bathtub
Where floating takes on a child-like fantasy.

Backpack mirrors…

Yesterday's love forgetting,
As today's body remembers
Pitched tent atop a mountain peak
Sheltering bodies arched and riding
Pebbles hiding beneath a ground cloth.
Affections forever indented in knee-cap memory.
Climbing kisses.
Now but mementos
Afloat within gathering clouds.

Window mirrors…

Reminding stolen pleasures
With a feather-filled couch.
So nice to sink into,
So painful to rise out of.

Full-Length mirrors…

Miserable mirror on the wall,
Who's the feistiest of them all?

Mind mirrors…

Old once knew young,
Now has become the one who knew itself then
Beyond any fear,
Above any retreat,
Now stares vacantly
At withered skin,
Where trophy scars once glittered,
Their scar tissue aglow,
Now upstaged by octogenarian bruises.
F***ing table corner
Leaped out from nowhere.

Bottom of the highball glass mirror…

Look at this.
I know reflection's lookin' at me
Sending me that ironic smile.
Face smiles back.
A gloating embrace of another kind
Without gentle touch,
Without a kiss so missed,
As time races forward,
Readying another chance embrace of reverie.

Mirrors distort,
Don't they?

Of course they do

Everyday funhouses, they are.

Bottoms up

As Richard says it so well….appreciate your honesty. I find myself comforted by this honesty. The discrete interpretations are marvelous here: “Affections forever indented in knee-cap memory. That is a radiant inferrance. My favorite lines are: “Old once knew young,/Now has become the one who knew itself then” I am glad to have taken this ‘Mirrors’ journey with you today. “It’s not just me” is one of the great values of poetry — resonating with the words of experience, written by another. ~~ djl

"Mirrors distort,
Don't they?"
"Poetry is a mirror which makes beautiful that which is distorted." Percy Bysshe Shelley. Perhaps the best mirrors in a persons life, are old friends - the ones that share unadorned truth, and never stroke the ego to gain an advantage. Remember: "What lies behind us, and what lies in front of us, are tiny matters to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson. Appreciate your honesty. Peace.... rlc

Mirrors are a curiosity indeed in the myriad ways in which they reflect what can (and cannot) be seen. An intriguing write.
