Life's Goal Posts

Life’s game lets us control many things until time runs out.

 Life’s Goal Posts

We are a complete team unto ourselves

We know the Offence strategy

The Defence necessity

We start our game

Not knowing if we are fit enough

To last through the often-grueling time ahead

We try to test the opposing forces

Our id crouches

A run into a fortified line of  superego determinate

We take to the air

Floating a hope

Watching effort fail

Then…

Time takes its toll

We are in our final quarter

We have scored successes

We have endured failures

We stand ready for the final minutes

We often take a deep breath

Knowing the mind and body

Appreciate the change up

Yet understand

Time continues ticking

Moving the goal posts

Will make little difference

Too little time left

Only an opportunity

To keep one’s head held high

As the game has been played fairly

And whether accolades

Or disappointment prevails

We have the choice

To believe everything is as it should be

Or that we feel we’ve been cheated

Other players remind us

The end of the game

Is just the beginning of preparation

For tomorrow’s challenge

And yes…

When the family’s mascot nods

Shakes its horns

And mouths something

We know not the meaning

But…

It lets us leave the game’s arena

Accepting the smile we feel

Knowing we played our hearts out

With relentless passion, dedication and effort

Knowing the goal posts aren’t made to be moved.

Breath easy

You have played the quarters knowing the game’s longevity rules govern

Time has had a good run.

Is that why they tear the goal posts down after the game?

Comparing a game of football with a life is a nice analogy. I've often noted how famous quarterbacks, thinking they still have it, move on from their championship teams to lesser teams in need of their services. Only to fail miserably. It's really sad to see them make that mistake.

Not knowing if we are fit enough, so true. Sometimes you just have to play.
