I have always had a fascination with eyes, not everyone’s eyes, but every so often you come across someone whose eyes just catch your attention and stand out above the rest. I have found that you can learn a lot about people by looking at their eyes. You can tell if they are happy or sad, and anger shows up easily in the eyes. With just one glance into your children’s eyes you know right away that they aren’t feeling well. My wife often has migraine headaches and her eyes will most often let me know when she’s had one. Sometimes eyes can say things better than words can.
Just the function of the eye itself is something that I find fascinating. The fact that this round piece of machinery made of merely tissue gives us the ability to “see’. It’s a miraculous thing in my eyes and hard for me to understand how anyone could believe that this just ”happened”.
I can recall a time when I was in high school sitting in my woodshop class. We were watching a movie on eye protection and I can remember that in the movie, Senator Everett Dirkson was giving a presentation on eye safety. I can recall one statement that he made and it has stayed with me through the years. He made the comment that our eyes are “The windows to our mind” I often look back and think how true that is.
Eyes come in a wide variety of colors and every once in a while you come across a pair of eyes whose color stands out above the rest. I once met a woman at work whose eyes were a beautiful shade of blue unlike anything I had ever seen on a human being. While talking to her I couldn’t help but comment on the color of her eyes. She told me that they were contacts and it almost broke my heart, but they were beautiful none the less. My wife tells me that my eyes change colors. Although I have never seen it I will take her at her word.
I like to dabble in poetry and it’s easy to see from reading other peoples writes, that I am not the only person in the world that notices eyes. Its amazing how many beautiful poems have been written, by people inspired by a pair of eyes. Often times if there is but one thing I remember about a person it is their eyes.
Looking back at all the eyes that I remember, there is one pair that I know I will never forget as long as I live. They were the eyes of a young man, older than I was at the time but much younger than I am now. I was working in the yard one day and I heard a loud crashing sound. I looked across the field and saw that there had been an automobile accident. I got in my car to go over there to see if I could help. By the time I got there a crowd had already stopped and there was not much they needed me for. The crowd was around a car off to the side of the road and there was another car in the center of the intersection with no one around it. There was a lady pinned in the car that the crowd was around and it was obvious that this lady had pulled out in front of the other car, she didn’t seem to be too badly injured, she was just pinned in.
I decided to go back home, thankful that it appeared that no one was seriously hurt and I figured that they had enough bystanders on the scene. As I walked back to my car, I walked by the car that was sitting in the middle of the intersection. As I passed I happened to glance into the car. I was very shocked to see a man laying in the back seat of the car. It was the driver of this car and he had been killed instantly upon impact. To this day I’m not sure why, shock perhaps, but I stood there looking into this mans eyes. His eyes were a beautiful steel blue color and he appeared to be looking into my eyes also.
I don’t know how long I stared into his eyes, it seemed like forever but it may have only been a moment. My gaze was finally broken when a police officer had arrived and opened the car to see if the man had a pulse as obviously others had before he arrived. I felt numb as I walked back to my car trying not to cry. He didn’t even look injured other than a small cut on his lip that wasn’t even bleeding. He had apparently hit the windshield and his neck had been broken. I had always heard it said that death is but a breath away. Those words became real to me, looking into that man’s eyes as I stood beside that car that day.
I remember I took my wife out to supper that night and then took her shopping. I bought her things that I knew she had been wanting even though we really didn’t have the money to spare. A lot of things go through your mind at times like this. It would be weeks before I could close my eyes at night and not see his eyes looking back at me. I read about him in the newspaper the day after the accident and for years after that I could tell you his name and the name of his three little girls. Though his eyes no longer haunt me I can still see them when I want to and I will never forget them.
Yes, I do believe that our eyes are the windows to our minds and to our souls. Whenever we talk to someone we should look them in the eye, for in our eyes is where we really are.

Absolutely! And I'll tell ya a secret that I've learned about 'death'. All may think I'm weird but that man was still there looking right at you and talking to you no doubt in my mind. My eyes change color even though they are brown my neice says my eyes are black if you ask her.
They definitely are the universal language and can tell you Everything!
