Are your WORDS hitting the target?
I don’t mean the specific group of people; I mean the heart of everyone who reads it.
As a writer, the heart should be our target. And if our words don’t touch our heart while writing, they will not touch the heart of a stranger.
This is especially true when writing memoirs.
Writing My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007 (
www.nancycarey.com) touched my heart deeply. I shed many tears while writing, yet I also laughed a lot. The words written triggered emotions within me – and hopefully will trigger the same for everyone who reads them. And when I read them out loud, I had trouble finishing a sentence without tears or laughter. No kidding.
Cathy lives in Maryland and I live in Virginia which meant most of our review was done via phone. Reading my words out loud had a profound effect on me. They made me realize how special words are – and how easily they can hurt as well as encourage. Each word is a piece of a puzzle – and when all the words fit together perfectly, the picture is absolutely beautiful and it will touch the heart!
So the next time you write words that MUST target the specific group – remember the heart. For the first lesson in copywriting is not to sell, but make the offer touch the heart.
