April 6, 2009
Naveen Lekhchandaani an agent of a city jeweller is missing with gold and jwellery worth Rs 30 L. He left his house for an evening stroll and did not return. His wife informed the police when his employer - Ratan Seth came to look for him and the gold that had been entrusted to him.

April 7, 2009
Various parts of human body were found strewed on the Kanpur-Lucknow highway over a distance of nearly 6 kms along the Jaajmau bypass. A total of 46 pieces of the body were found. Some had been eaten by the scavenging animals. The fact came to light when a villager reported to the local chowki that a human hand was lying in the bush. A team of police men were deputed to search for other body parts. Finally a body could be reconstituted but its identity was unknown as the head could not be traced. There were no clothes or other belongings that could help in identification.

The police claimed that the body was that of NL and he had been murdered for the gold and jewellery he had on his person.

Umesh Jena, who was arrested by the city police on June 24, 2009 in connection with the gruesome murder of jewellery agent Naveen Lekhchandaani, has failed in his attempt to get released on bail.

The police commissioner claimed that the gruesome murder-for-gain that shook the city was a one-man operation planned and executed by one Umesh Jena, a 45 years old Jena is surgical assistant in the City Nursing Home who also dabbled in the share market.

The motive was to loot the 2 kg of gold jewellery worth about Rs 30 lakh, which Naveen Lekhchandaani was carrying with him on the fateful day. The money was required for payments of debts incurred by UJ due to collapse of the stock market.

During questioning, UJ reportedly confessed that he had been planning to loot NL since the time he learned that NL frequently carried large amount of gold and jewellery on his person. UJ had known NL for some time as they both traded from the same branch of SherKhan. He had sent his wife Santhoshi and two sons to his native village in Orissa as a preparatory measure.

On April 6, UJ took NL to his second-floor apartment near New Market around 6 pm on the pretext of having a drink and attacked him with an iron rod and killed him. He hid the gold jewellery and other belongings of NL. He left for his workplace at Laal banglaa at 8.00 next morning.

The police is not divulging the results of search at UJs flat. Till date, the police have unable to find the gold or any other item belongings to NL. The head of NL has supposedly not been traced till date.

The police have sent all the pieces of human body found on April 7 for forensic examination and DNA tests for confirmation of the identity. Luckily NL donated blood during a Lions compaign and it is available for matching with the body parts. The investigation has been completed and the evidence handed over to public prosecutor for filing a charge sheet under sections 302 for murder, 395 and 397 for loot and 201 destruction of evidence.

Sri PK Awasthi, public prosecutor during an interview informed that in the matter of gold loot and murder the prosecution would prove it charges on the basis of UJs confession, a positive DNA test and other circumstantial evidence like UJs background as surgical assistant, his losses in the share market, few witnesses that had seen them together, his mobile record (showing a number of calls made to NL) to get a conviction.

The DNA from the samples did not match with that of NL. There was no evidence that crime had been committed at UJs flat. The missing gold or the head could also not be traced. No evidence came forth that UJ had huge debts. 

UJ contended that the police had arrested him to "ease out the pressure" on them. Claiming that he was innocent and that the case had been foisted on him, he said he had been made a scape-goat by the police that struggled for one and half months to solve the murder and the confession had been made under extreme duress to escape third degree.

In absence of a body and any corroborative evidence the police had no case and the honourable court ordered withdrawal of all charges against UJ.

NL – Its done, all gold etc has been sold for Rs 38,75,566.00. The price rise gave us a a profit of nearly 6L. Your share of more than 19L is lying in that grey briefcase. This is where we go our own different ways!
UJ – It was a good plan. Crushing the head and disposing it with butchery waste, and strewing other body parts on the high way was a stroke of genius!
NL – and you executed the butchery well! The idea of getting the dead body from the police …. OMG the police paying us to dispose that unclaimed body ……they get 750 rupees for disposing these and he gave us 100…..
Now you can go back to your family in Orissa!
UJ – Yes ……… back home for me and what will you do ….. your wife ??
NL – I will have to find out and then plan………. I hope she is with her parents!
