Greta, my 2 year old dog of undefinable breed, woke me up this morning with a mournful face, hoping to coax me into taking her to the pond where she can frolic with her friends. The pond (a beautiful doggie park) is miles from my house, but it's one of the few places in Miami where dogs can run,swim with the turtles and have fun. She loves it there because after she's thoroughly exhausted I take her to McDonald for two burgers. I also take Daisy Duke, my daughter's dog (also of dubious breed), who is older than Greta, and as a rule can't stand her. But she puts aside her dislike once she's inside my Jeep en route to the pond. Daisy starts howling as we near the park, she has an in-built GPS system that is fail-proof. This gets Greta excited too and the two of them go at it until i park the car, drawing the attention of every dog and dog-owner in the park. As i open the door, they both make a dash for the chainlink fence doors, where several dogs are already waiting to say hello.
Dogs have a peculiar way of greeting each other, but they seem to like it! After they smell each others' ____, they scamper off for a swim. I love to watch them all play together and sometimes i chat with the dog-owners, who, as a rule, are a very friendly breed. We love to talk about our cute and adorable animals as if they were our children. And they are!
An hour or so later, Greta and Daisy Duke are both filthy. I hose them down at the park and board them in the back of the Jeep. Daisy Duke starts howling as soon as she sees the golden arches. I order 4 hamburgers and head back. The smell of the burgers lulls them to sleep until we get home. Ahhh...nothing like a burger!
Hopefully, Greta will be too tired to demand anything else and will let me write. At least until five. At five, her boyfriend from across the street, the the champion bred Labradoodle , will be walking past our door and she will want to see him. Sigh! Thethings we have to do for our kids!
