Adventures of Kanani
Chapter 1
Kimo and Dillon came running into my office out of breath.
“What’s up guys”? I asked.
“It’s Kanani,” stated Dillon.
“What happened?” I exclaimed.
“She disappeared”! Kimo said.
“What do you mean, she disappeared”? “How could she disappear”?
I was now more than concerned, I was getting frantic thinking about all of the horrible things that could happen to my beloved Golden Retriever.
“Start from the being, so we can find her.” I stated as I started running out of my office and into the store looking for any of my employees. I spotted Allan.
“Allan, I have to go, can you close up if I am not back? Kanani is missing! I have to go find her.”
“Sure, Marie, I will call you on your cell phone if she turns up here.”
“Thank you!”
Stepping into the sun on the hot pavement I turned to my friends wanting an explanation. “So, what happened?”
Kimo spoke first. “We tied up the boat at Kaluakoi Beach at 9 this morning. We decided to go diving over there.”
Dillon interrupted, “we have done this many times with Nani and she has never left the boat!”
“Dillon, let me finish.” “There were a few boats anchored all around. We thought nothing of it.” “Dillon had water out for Kanani and we told her we wouldn’t be gone long.”
“Ok, Dillon you finish.” Kimo said turning to his friend.
“Oh, Marie,” Dillon said; short of breath, as we were sprinting down to their boat. “My heart sank when she was not there as we immerged from the water.” “Kimo and I looked everywhere.” “There was one boat left by ours and we asked them if they had seen her.” “They said, no. They had just gotten there.” Dillon was by now totally out of breath.
“I think," Kimo said; “someone took her!”
We reached the dock and I jumped into their speedboat. Kimo untied it and we took off for Molokai. The sea was calm and there was not a cloud in the sky. We scanned the water for any sign of her all the way over.
Reaching Kaluakoi Beach, we tied up and jumped out. We walked the beach calling her name for over an hour.
“There is no way she swam to shore then climbed the steep hill to the store is there?” I asked.
“No.” They both said in unison. Nonetheless we started the hike up the steep road to the little store.
We walked in and no one was around. The place was wide open and no one there.
“Boy, this is getting weird.” I said turning to my friends. “Let’s look out back.”
We walked around the back and could see the whole beach and water. There was no sign of anyone.
“Well, we had better head back and I will put out some notices for her.” “I am going to leave my shirt on the beach incase she comes back here.” “That way she will know I am looking for her.”
With a heavy heart we started to go home.
