A Young man away from home, in search of home, a better one.
Unlike any other day in the beautiful morning of Africa, in a small community known as “Okere” the villagers morns, not for the usual unexpected death of it’s people but on this day, a seed, the fruit of their womb is being sent out of the home into a strange land known to them as “The promise land”, America. With almost all their asset, they financed him, hoping that one day, he’ll come back home with much to give. Akem, only seventeen years of age, was to embank on this journey. As the 1969 Volkswagen slowly pulls away from his home, creating a newly form cloud of smoke from the blasting muffler, the entire villagers, in tears and joy wave solemnly to the departing car.
With a mission to fulfill, and the entire villager depending of him, Akem, carrying only two bags of cloth, set out into a new world, not knowing where to go, what to expect, but with determination on his young mind, he boarded the plane. “What should I do next” he said in his trouble mind as he counts his fingers, one for each activity. As he sat washing the endless clouds, tears slowly dropped from his eyes from the memory of all he had left behind. “Are you alright, Sir?” the attendant addresses him, “No, I’m not” he replied with more tears steadily flowing off his eyes. He would not explain to the attendant what was troubling him but rather said in a forced smile “I’ll be fine”.
“The plane will be landing in approximately thirty minutes” the co-pilot announced, with only thirty minutes left for him to see his new home, and thousands of mile away from his, he finally realized what he was sent to do; “Go my son, and work hard to bring home something for your people” these were the words his father had repeatedly ring on his ear, and so the plane landed in New York. A young man, separated away from his home all in search of a better life for him and his people, now faced with a place where a stranger he will be called and this is the story of a man away from home in search of home.
