Curt boldly confronts the monstrous Thomas Harvey about his sex trade operation and learns more than he bargained for!

Curt’s  taxi  pulled  up  to  the  guard  shack  of  the  gated  community  at  ten  am,  and  was  allowed  immediate  access.

“Mr.  Harvey has been expecting you,” said the no nonsense, guard.  There  are  four  lanes,  take  the  one  to  the  far  right.”

The taxi driver  did  as  he  was  told,  arriving  in  front  of  the  massive  mansion  with  a  rigid  butler  who  opened  the  car  door  and  paid  the  cab  driver.

“Right this way, Sir…”  Leading  him  to  a  golf  cart  that  transported  him  across  the  manicured  lawns.  Within  moments,  the  blur  of  a  distant  form  was  revealed  as Thomas  Harvey.  It  was  a  wonder  that  the  eighty-two  year  old  could  lift  the  club,  let  alone,  swing.  The  yellow  sweater  clad,  gentleman  handed  the  club  to  his  Asian  caddy  and  then  turned  to  face  him.  He  was  tall  with  perfect  posture  and  had  no  problem  confronting  him  with  piercing  blue  eyes,  creased  by  crow’s  feet.

  “Hello, Mr.  Castillo.”

“No one’s called me by that name since college.”

“To what do I owe the pleasure, Mr.  Castillo?”

“You tell me?  You’re the one who lured me here.”

“Nonsense!  I’ve  heard  you  were  investigating  some  areas  where  I  may  have  a  common  interest.  It’s only natural that you would show up here.  I have lunch set up in the gazebo-Join me?”

  “Sure.  Lead the way.”

As  the  waiter  began  serving  their  meal,  Curt  wasted  no  time  cutting  through  the  chase.  “Mr.  Harvey,  please  tell  me,  why  on  earth  a  man  of  your  means  would  steal  children  from  their  beds  and  carry  them  thousands  of  miles  away  from  home  to  be  raped  by  pedophiles?”

Sipping  from  his  wine  glass  and  savoring  the  flavor  for  a  moment-  “Because  there  was  a  demand  for  American  children;  specifically  blond  haired,  blue-eyed  children.  Try  your  wine,  while  the  temperature  is  still  complimentary  to  the  body…”

“A demand- For American children?”

“Yes.  A demand,” he said calmly.  “About  forty  years  ago,  give  or  take,  there  was  a  demand  for  Puerto  Ricans.  At  that  time  we  simply  gave  the  parents  a  couple  of  hundred  dollars,  explaining  that  their  children  would  have  a  much  better  life  in  our  care.  …And, it was true .  Those  children  were  very  well  taken  care  of-  and  loved,  in  a  very  special  way…”

Curt  had  to  stand  up  and  walk  a  few  yards  away.

  “What are you talking about?!”

“Your grandparents aren’t dead, Curtis, like your mom told you.  They  are  alive  and  well  in  an  impoverished  village  in  San  Juan,  Puerto  Rico.  We  purchased  your  mother  from  them  for  your  father,  Judge  Mason…

Kind  of  a  gift  to  your  father  for  being  so  helpful  to  the  organization”

Watching  the  shades  of  horror  and  disgust  on  Curt’s  face  evolve  with  each  revolting  word,  Thomas  continued.  “He  was  so  taken  with  Eloisa’s  exotic  beauty  at  just  five  years  old,  we  set  the  adoption  up  and  he  had  his  little  girl.  At  thirteen,  she  gave  birth  to  you,  and  Thomas  did  whatever  she  wanted  to  keep  her  happy.  That’s how you lived your privileged life.  But  as  years  went  on,  she  aged,  and  at  sixteen  she  was  just  too  old  for  him.  So  we  used  her  to  persuade  the  parents,  in  that  village  to  give  their  children  a  better  life  as well.  It worked out well, until the demand changed.

Now,  your  mother  just  couldn’t  let  things  be  and  insisted  on  blowing  the  whistle  if  Thomas  didn’t  stop  giving  little  girls  and  boys  a  good  home.  This went on for years.  He  tried  reasoning  with  her  and  she  went  on  and  on  about  having  hidden  letters,  photos,  and  proof,  until  we  just  had  to  burn  the  house  down  to  get  rid  of  that  sort  of  thing.  We  own  the  police,  so  no  one  questioned  the  fire  or  her  death.  You  went  off  to  college-  a  little  sad,  but  you  did  ok.”

The  old  man  continued  to  drink  his  wine  as  Curt  sank  to  the  ground  vomiting  and  grieving  with  silent,  open  mouthed  cries.  He  couldn’t  catch  his  breath,  even  when  the  golf  cart  returned  to  pick  them  up.

“Will you be joining us, Mr. Castillo?”  There was no answer.  “No, I suppose not.  You take your time and pull yourself together.  Peter will see you back to the airport.  And  if  I  were  you,  I’d  think  about  my  poor  old  grandma  and  grandpa  in  Puerto  Rico.  So  far  they’ve  been  doing  well,  living  off  of  our  condolences.  So don’t tip the apple cart son.”

With  those  words  the  golf  cart  rode  away,  carrying  Satan  back  to  hell.

Curt  got  back  on  a  plane,  but  he  wasn’t  headed  to  Chicago.  He  was  headed  to  Texas  to  dig  up  the  evidence  his  mother  had  planted  for  him.

You certainly got my attention with this revelation of sanctioned wrongdoing. And it would be a book I would read if I was into reading this kind of thing.
