"Sophie was a tall, thin woman of thirty-six whose short blonde hair had started to gray prematurely a few years earlier. It had once been long and golden, flowing down her back and landing in thick waves between her shoulder blades. She could still remember the feel of the wind through her hair, the way it fingered and caressed each strand. One morning she found herself in front of the bathroom mirror and was struck by the faded look and loss of color. She grabbed the scissors and began to cut, conscious of nothing but each snap of the blades."
