Mary watched the way Lauren used her hands when she spoke. Even though she was using them at the moment as weapons to make ugly gestures about Mary, they were still something beautiful to behold. Lauren wore silver rings on almost every one of her long, dainty fingers. Her fingernails were painted a different fashionable color every day. It was a fact that Lauren’s nails were the envy of every eighth grade girl at Grouper’s.
Just when Mary thought she couldn’t feel any worse, Lauren wiggled her thin, bejeweled fingers toward the back of the room and giggled. It was a pantomime intended just for Mary, as if to remind her that Mary would never be a part of Lauren’s world. Even so, Mary had tried to fit in once.
For one full day at the beginning of the year, Mary dressed like Lauren and tried to use the same hand gestures as the popular girl. Instead of being treated better, however, she was treated even worse than normal. Other kids made fun of her and teased her relentlessly for days. It was as clear to Mary then as now that she was no Lauren and never would be. She could wear the same clothes as Lauren. She could act like Lauren, but there was no way Mary could compete with Lauren’s long blonde hair or pale blue eyes, and she certainly couldn’t compete with Lauren’s money.
so sad when people aren't accepted because they aren't popular, good looking, or rich. kids can be cruel; i know from experience. i was teased, and years later, i still feel the pain and remember the rejection i felt each and every day.
