In all of the previous four books, it had been easy to write. I put my main character, Arcadis, in perilous situations, and write him out of them. However, in book five, I am finding it hard to find direction which will lead to book six, which I have a basic story line ready.
I am currently in the second book of the trilogy that is a sequel to another book. I have written 25 chapters but have not gotten to the meat of the matter yet. I've recently thought up a couple of twists that I will put into upcoming chapters, but I have no idea how my hero, like Arcadis, is going to solve the problem before him. I know the outcome in the third book of the trilogy because it is the same as that of the first book.
So, in a way, I have your problem, too. But it seems like every time I sit down to write a chapter without much of a clue, I start writing, ideas pop into my head, and I am generally quite satisfied with what I have written… Strange.
You also are describing classic writer's block. I've had that a time or two. The best cure is Isaac Asimov's. Have several projects going on at the same time. When you're blocked with one, start working on another. Before you know it, you have an idea about the one you've been blocked with, and you can go back to it.
