My book entitled When Half of Your Heart Dies depicts the murder of my son on July 1, 2000. The young man who shot and killed my son was eventually captured, charged and given a sentence of 15 years to life. That occurred in 2001.
Since his sentence, this young man has had 2 parole hearings and both times his parole has been denied either due to victim impact statements which were submitted by myself and friends and family of my murdered son or perhaps this murderer's unruly behavior while behind bars.
Well, he is now up for another hearing and will go before the Parole Board this month. I have instructed the Board that I have no intention of submitting an impact statement for this hearing but I did request them to notify me if and when he will be released. I will keep you posted as to the outcome of this hearing.
Since it has been 19 years since your son was murdered, it is obvious that a death in the family like this has far-reaching consequences. It appears, since you are not going to file an impact statement, that you may have considered that he has served enough time or you are willing to forgive him. If he is released, I hope that prison has changed him in a positive way rather than making him a hardened criminal.
