Modern day adventures of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Fractured fairlytale
Standing at the top of the mountain, Arleen shivered, wrapped her scarf around her chin, and turned her back to the wind. Her eyes scanned the surrounding countryside searching for some sign of a family member. She had been keeping watch at the preordained meeting spot for the last 3 days, hoping and praying someone in her family would find her. She leaned against a tree for support and tried to ignore the rumblings of her empty stomach as she desperately tried to hold back the tears
The last few days had seemed surreal. Living in a constant fog, her thoughts returned time and again to the day she had returned home to find the door ajar, clothing and books on the floor, and a few blood spatters in her brother’s room. The bulldog gang had come to exact their revenge for her father, Saul’s whistleblowing. The whole family was at risk. Panicked, she had quickly gathered a few precious keepsakes along with some food and taken off for Mountain Top Cave, certain others would be waiting there. When she arrived hours later, she collapsed in grief to discover the only inhabitants of the cave were squirrels.
Ever since, she had been rising at dawn to keep vigil, never leaving her spot until darkness made it impossible to see. By now, she knew the rhythm of the place: the sights and sounds of nature, the rancher walking to the barn every day to milk the cows, and the Bear family driving away each morning only to return every evening.
Heavy rains arrived on the fourth day. Needing respite from the bitter cold, she decided to walk the short distance to the Bear’s home and rest under the covered porch. She tried the door, found it unlocked and succumbed to the temptation to enter the house. There she found left over oatmeal in a bowl on the table set for three. She hungrily ate it, took the liberty of soaking in a hot shower and entered Baby Bear’s bedroom. She decided to rest for just a minute, laid down and promptly fell asleep. She slept so soundly she didn’t hear the Bear family return.
She awoke to the sound of Baby Bear screaming that someone was sleeping in his bed. Alarmed, she ran out of the house in such a hurry she forgot her backpack. Mama Bear recognized the little girl from a picture in the paper. She knew both the gang and the police were looking for the little girl the press dubbed “Goldilocks”.
The Bear Family took pity on the child and left her backpack on the porch when they left home the next day. They left the door unlocked, put food and a note on the table telling her she was safe with them. She ate, washed and took a nap but made sure to leave before they returned. She just didn’t know who to trust.
Meanwhile Mama and Papa Bear were devising a plan to let Goldilock’s family know where she was. They knew the bulldog gang had spies in the police force so calling them was not an option. Finally they placed a cryptic ad in the paper and on the internet hoping Goldilock’s family would read the paper, see the post and decipher it to find their little girl.
During the time it took for Goldilock’s aunt to retrieve her, the Bear Family made sure she was fed and had plenty of blankets since she refused to stay in the house. Goldilocks and her family were soon swept into the Witness Protection Program so they lost track of the little girl. But every year or so, they would get an anonymous email with nothing but a picture of a box of oatmeal letting them know Goldilocks and her family were safe and thinking of them.
