Two children, abandoned on a schooner in the British Virgin Islands, grow together as friends to survive.
This is a story about two children, left alone on a large schooner in Roadtown Harbour, Tortola in the 1970’s. The story starts out with a young boy, troubled in school and his parents from New York City who decide to lease a schooner, with an option to buy it, for the sailing charter business, sailing the BVI’s. However, at the last minute, another couple and their daughter, very spoiled and reluctant to leave her friends, decided to join them as partners in the business. Slowly, the plans changed/evolved to meet the aggressive/innovative ideas of the second couple at the expense of the original couple.
Things progressed from awkward to strange to difficult to major issues over a short period of time:
1. Couple 1 flew down first and saw the boat – disaster and many issues with locals,
2. They decide not to tell couple 2 about the conditions because they need their money,
3. Couple 2 flies down and freaks out, stays on shore and fighting begins
4. Both children are left on board when the two couples decide to meet in town to work things out… they never return.
5. The two children are stuck with each other and do not get along at all until they determine that they HAVE to get along to survive:
a. Food issues
b. Water
c. Toilet
d. Cockroaches
e. Sleeping on deck – sharing a double sleeping bag in the rain
f. No dinghy – find a battered, holed foam snark sailboat
i. Use the main halyard to haul it up in air
ii. Find a can of fiberglas resin to patch it
g. Going ashore first time together
i. Hiding from police
ii. Faking their situation – “our parents are shopping – be back soon, etc.”
iii. Hitchhiking to Josiahs Bay
iv. Finding half-empty beaches
v. Sharing a little money for food
h. Back aboard in better mood as friends
i. Fumbled attempt to make out
ii. Handled well by both
iii. No sex – friendship only
i. Two strangers show up:
i. Friends of couple 2
ii. Spoiled, privileged jerks
iii. Issues arise – hit on girl, abuse the boy
iv. They leave eventually
6. Search for parents?
a. They first just walk around Roadtown
b. Meet nice, helpful locals,
c. Meet a bad “local” but not from Tortola
d. No sign of parents – no trail
e. Nice locals contact police for help
i. Good cop
ii. Bad cop – knows what happened, paid off
f. Bad local pretends to be helpful
i. Trying to get the girl
ii. Boy is naiive, girl smart
iii. Fake leads
iv. They figure it out and are scared
v. One night, some drunk sailors try to climb aboard
1. Both kids team up and repel them
2. One gets on board – hit by girl, knocked in water
3. They leave, cursing and laughing in the dark
4. Kids become closer, hugging, scared, then kissing
g. Police find evidence of foul play
i. Couple 1’s bodies found, dead, half-buried, burned
ii. Couple 2 not found – suspected but why leave their daughter?
1. They actually were scam artists and left for Antigua
2. Not their real daughter
3. Kidnapped years earlier
h. Twist as girls real (wealthy) parents show up ---- happy ending, they adopt boy and restore the schooner…
