A little about the book, 'Whisper on the Wind' Chapter 8 tells about the move from Wolfe County to the big city of Paintsville Ky in the early fifties.
PAINTSVILLE KY 1950's
The big greyhound bus chugs its way across Highway 15 toward Painstville. C.C. and Ernie Cottle sit midway down the long row of seats and talk in hushed whispery voices, careful not to awaken the 3 year old Dudy whose little body lays slumped across their knees. The child is bissfully unaware of the big change that was taking her from her quiet life in the country. C.C. would go to school in Paintsville to learn how to be a welder and use a blowtorch, to hear him tell it. Dudy grips a half eaten box of Cracker Jacks in a grubby little paw and dreams of the ghost child left behind.
''Will you be gone forever and ever?'' The sad little specter asks in a harsh gravely voice of one who has died from the whooping cough.'' The sleeping Dudy does not answer. She has no answer. The ghost child takes the white shells from around its wispy neck and lovingly places them around Dudy's skinny throat before vanishing through the bus in a puff of smoke and slowly drifting back north toward Poke Hollow. It looks back in sorrow, silent ghost tears streaming from each hollow eye. It loved Dudy Cottle and wanted to follow the bus but could not, as it was a spirit of the mountains...
