No one starts a family knowing how to deal with every problem that they will face while raising a child. I find it easy to write about children and love, because we have raised five wonderful children, it makes it easy for me to work with an opened heart.

                           Children Should Come
                            With Instructions

Where would we start. Here's a good place, children are being born everyday all over the world Some are born to wealthy families and others not so fortunate. Some can't have children of their own and chose to adopt a child and that is so beautiful. It doesn't matter because I believe the things that matter most, are free. Yes we can all love our beautiful new born baby unconditionally, because they are so precious. Now I do believe in my heart and soul that love is NOT something you say but something you DO. There are so many parents that don't really know what or how to do love, well let me try to explain. For the following months you feel your child move and kick about, you talk to him/her and let them know they are so special and that you can't wait to welcome them into this big world of yours. You try very hard to prepare yourself for the birth and the years ahead to come. It is a lesson by itself, you will not have all the answers and yes it is alright to ask for help along the way, that will just make you a better parent. Remember children do not come with instructions, they should but they don't. The first thing is to remember your whole life is about to change for about the next eighteen years. Yes you will be there and responsible for this tiny child for that long and the hard part is,this is just the beginning. You have to adjust to broken sleep, for whenever this child decides to wake for a feeding, so will you, it doesn't matter if you're hungry or not, this little tiny baby you are bringing into this world says "My belly is empty" plesae get up and
feed me, because you love this child so much you automatically jump to their crys. This my dear, is a form of love and even though you may think this child doesn't realize you got up, you are dead wrong, soon the child is happy and contented and back to dreamland, for about another two hours at which time they will call on your help again. What about the nights the child crys and they aren't wet and they have no interrest in feeding, oh now they probably have gas, and no matter what you do, they don't seem to settle down and before you know it, you are walking the floor with your baby as you gently sing in their ear patting their little back and soon you are crying tears because you feel the pain that your child is going through, yes dear this is love. They now have a tempreture, an ear infection attached to that and the drools are out of this world. All they want to do is cry and be cuddled. They don't know what is wrong and soon you notice, they are teething, so you hold them and rock them and sooth their pain with gel and baby tyenol. Again you,ve just given your child the gift of love. Soon your child begins to crawl and getting ready for their first steps and now you have to child-proof your home for the things that may hurt them, yes all your pride possesins are put away, out of sight and out of mind, you're right, this is love. The first day of school, wow , you weren't ready for that. But you take them off to school and show how proud you are of your child and the way they behave. Yes this is also love. You've just got your first lesson in raising a child. How does it feel, so here goes. It's time to bring your child to his/her new home, maybe this is your first child, maybe it's your second, but it's okay to be a bit nervous. You may have made a few mistakes with the first one that you don't want to redo with this one or maybe this is your first one and it is important to you to do it right the first time, well here goes. There are very few rules to remember when you are raising a child. They don't but all children should come with instructions and this is what they would be: Instructions for Raising a Child Properly

  1. Wrap your tiny baby snuggly in blankets so they feel the warmth that they grew accustomned to in Mommy's womb.

2.Hold your tiny baby gently and kiss their cheek softly and remind them that they are loved.

  3. Prepare for sleepless nights, when your baby sleeps, the parent should sleep, that way they can be alert when the baby needs them at any hour.

  4. Never be upset that the baby has woken you from your sleep, be grateful that the baby was able to cry to wake you.

  5. Always have formulas made ahead and placed in the refrigerator for feedings, so your tiny baby doesn't have to get too upset because they are hungry.

  6. Make sure there are plenty of diapers available , because you are going to need them.

  7. Make sure that your little baby is fed and cleaned regularly to keep them happy.

  8. Remember a childs cry is the only way they can communicate with you, so don't wish for them to close up, it is their only way of telling you somethings wrong. There are a lot of parents in the world who wish they could hear their childs cry.

  9. Every chance you get, kiss your child and tell them you love them and that they are a very important part of your life and of the world.

  10. As your child grows, they will learn what you teach them. Remember if you scream, then they will scream. If you curse, they will curse. If you speak gently, they too will control their tone.

11 Then they have to learn to share things, because greed is not going to be acceptable.

  12. How will you discipline your child. The law says you cannot abuse your child, verbally or mentally, and there is no need to. We want our child to respect us so we have to respect. them. There are other means to turn to. I have raised five children and they age from 40 to 55 today and they have grown to love and respect us. It doesn't matter where they see us, they take the time to hug us and tell us they love us. They are very proud to tell their friends,(These are my parents). They have said, they deserved whatever punishment they got growing up and more. When we told them they were grounded, it meant no television, no friends, no music, no going outdoors. What they were able to do was read a book or catch up on homework. We never let them have their toys in their bedrooms because if they were sent to their rooms, we didn't want them to occupy themselves with toys, we hoped without those things to distract them, they would think about what they had done or said and realize why it was wrong.

13.Never say no to a child without giving them a reason why, this is very important. If they were to say no to us, we would expect and demand them tell us why they said it. They deserve that respect to. Remember, if we want respect, we have to give it.

  14. We have never told our children who to be friends with but we've always encouraged them to bring their friends home to have dinner with us or to watch a movie or a sleepover, this gave us the chance to know who our children were friends with. If we disapproved of their behavior, we would talk to our child about it, giving them room to choose right from wrong. Usually they would talk to their friend and tell them if they continued to behave like that then they couldn't be friends. If you go against a child they will do the opposite of what you want, so keep this in mind. If you talk to them with respect, usually they will make the right choice and in the end you are proud parents because of your own accomplishments. Remember at all times almost anyone can bring a child into this world but it takes someone very special to be a MOM and DAD. A little magic can go a long ways, Love, Care, Kindness, Gentleness, Thoughtfulness and Understanding goes a lot farther when used in lage qualities.
I am not an expert but I am the Mother of five grown, happy children. I am the Grandmother of eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

You have aptly titled the subject of your story. There are so many varibles an dinbetweens that come with raising kids. I always learned to exspect the unexspected. Our home was a lot like your and our door was awlays open to the the kids that came through it. Many times one of ours would bring a friendhome for dinner ans I'd put an extra otatoe in the pot , or eat a littel less to feed them.We all try ot instill values and traditions in them , but in the end, they all make their own choices in this world. Great write...M

You have given me much food for thought here Rose, as taking care of a severely disabled person or an aged parent is much like the descriptions you gave of caring for a baby. I have recently done both. This is well thought out and well written advice, coming from years of experience. Thanks for sharing this valuable instructional writing.

These instructions should be included in every new parents discharge package from the maternity hospital as many new parents do not have the loving support of parents/grandparents/or friends. But...I believe the first baby is the practice child. LOL!
