sea of painful thoughts and black emotions lie just beneath the sur-
face of Joseph Reed, Jr., a young man who has recently been driven
to the point of insanity, as he lingers on a gripping tale of hell's demons
told by one of his co-workers. Joseph now envisions, in detail, the hor-
rific accounts, as he struggles between illusion and reality. His sanity
fades, allowing him to be haunted by the shadowed images he’s pro-
jected in his mind and the faint sounds that whisper with the night's
wind.
This particular night the winds are strong. The naked branches of
the trees close to his home scrape continuously against the dining room
window. Shadows from the branches create ghostly figures through the
thin, lace curtains that blow wildly from the opened window, and the
sounds from the night startle him with their rapid untimely movement.
He sits at the dining room table - as he does each night - in solitude.
But tonight is different. Tonight, he is accompanied by fear. The sec-
onds are suspended as Joseph raises a polished .45 caliber automatic
pistol to his head and slowly squeezes the trigger. The darkness inside
of him has been freed and so, too, has Joseph.
The next morning arrives quickly as if to anticipate someone find-
ing the lifeless body -as if this body is a close friend of the dawn. The
sun shines through the dining room curtains, but its rays are interrupted
by a death that will go unnoticed for days. Joseph was somewhat of an
introvert, and his social life consisted of sitcoms and frozen TV din-
ners.
The Friday night suicide soon turns into a Monday morning corpse,
and no one has noticed Joseph’s absence from work except his secre-
tary. He had instructed her earlier last week to give him morning wake
up calls. She dutifully complied. When she called his house Friday and
