The Christmas legend of a crippled little boy, a dying puppy and a child's faith in miracles.
So many generations of men, so many fervent prayers whispered in men's hearts, gave birth to stories and legends. Bits and pieces of those tales filtered through the mountains and reached the modern world. It was the Christmas legend, concerning the Baby Jesus, that brought me to the mountain valley the week before Christmas. There is the feel and smell of antiquity about San Luis, which looks much as it must have appeared when inspired Indians built it with the labor of their hearts. Inside there is an instant sense of peace and faith, and perhaps even love, as if the smile of God abides there.
