Loneliness and Why It Is Not The Cure
Sometimes we don't feel like it, but each of us is a unique mystery. The mystery of you and the mystery that is me have never existed before. No one exactly like you or me will ever exist again. The combination of qualities and giftedness that is you is a package that has never been put together before. It is as unique as your fingerprints. Only you can share your mystery and giftedness with me. It is also true that just as every snowflake and every grain of sand on the seashore has a unique structure, so am I different from every other human being in all of human history. The treasure of my uniqueness is mine to give or to withhold.
If you choose to withhold your gift from me, I will be deprived of sharing in the unique mystery and experience of you. Likewise, I can deny you the vicarious experience of what it is like to be me. Just as we will forever be deprived by such mutual withholding, the opposite possibility is also true . We can be forever enriched by a mutual openness and sharing. The vicarious participation in another's unique human experience is always enriching. This is the great gift of communication.
When you tell me who you are, when you share with me your uniqueness, you will take me into… a different family. You will share your old neighborhood with me. You will also probably tell me the stories you listened to as a child. You will take me into valleys and to the tops of your mountains, which I have never seen. I hope that you will introduce me to emotions, hopes, and dreams that were never mine. We could find likenesses and experience not being alone.
This sharing can only widen the dimensions of my mind and heart. Our sharing will forever enrich me. The size of my experienced world will be permanently enlarged because of your goodness to me.
