As most of us can bare witness, there have been at least one time in each of our lives when we've let the one get away. Then, we remember that one for the rest of our lives.
It was a dark and wet night, wet pavement from an earlier rain.
Heels clicked splashes on the streets before,
But now they were quiet, lonely and sane.
The full moon glistened on the misty steam rising from the archaic, misty street.
The sky was an artist's delight with bright stars
That peeked through clouds spread in tattered sheets.

Tall buildings stood broad with shoulders hiding in low, thick clouds.
They glistened concrete heaven in the day
But now wore a hazed sparkling night as jeweled shrouds.
I saw you on that dark and lonely night
Wearing your black dress and coat, your dark eyes so near and yet so far,
Standing beneath that dim light.

You were a woman, blossomed beauty I cannot deny.
But, new born into my life, new to life, a new invention to my corralled eye.
The night failed to hide you from destiny's delight.
I found you on that cobblestone corner with an echoing black post
That held that yellowing, aging light.

While holding my transit fare I saw you.
For reasons unknown my thoguhts went through.
I realized I had not experienced true happiness.
For so long I had fooled myself into thinking that what I had was best.

A quiet home in a quiet complex.
Lonely meals and still hours made me to now reflect.
In that moment my life passed before my eyes.
In an instance my once obscure future miraculously materialized.

They were sublime and went supine as you posed.
They were a mood to a rhyme on time as your chilled skin rose.
You took that deep breath in as if you felt my searching thought.
You let it out in a sigh, a gentle movement of your eye,
A pouting puff, a whispered cough.

Could you be that real part of fantasy?
Maybe an omen of ecstacy?
Is your name one that I should know?
Approach you, touch your hand or simply stay here,
Watching you and let it go?

I've had thoughts of infinity.
Is it you come true or maybe a misty entity?
I licked my lips so to speak so true to you my heart.
Approach you I must so we'll never part.
Should I tell you the truth of my erotic dreams?
Since childhood, I've held you, rubbed your back, made your sweat careen.

As a young man, I placed a diamond ring on your hand.
Lined up ALL of our children while at the altar we did stand.
We jetted to honeymoon across a moonlit, fast sea.
We went to an island of tropics where there was no one but you and me.

There we danced, sang and ran naked across the sparkling white beach.
Watched by a careful moon, a stratus filling belt of stars,
Both touching us with their ideas but, we were yet out of their reach.

And, when we grew old, I still assured that I
Would never ever leave you even if I should die.
My ideas go on into life beyond what we think we see.
The world we perceive is not the one that be.
I can love you beyond dimensions, the past and as far as your mind will fly.
My soul will follow yours' into life, death and to worlds gone by.

My feet are cold so I pull my coat.
The distance now seems like a ravenous moat.
Though cold I perspired in my hand.
Pillows of warm air in my mind, my cold feet and hands.
I must, I know I must also be your dream.
This fels too real, nothing else feels this clean.
It feels too right for you to not feel it, too.
But, perhaps, you feel that the first words are MY assignment to do.

I finally conquer the chill with a first step.
She's my future that I accept.
I see dinners with family, presents and smiles beneath a decorated tree.
New Years coming and going as we, alone in our home,
Wrapped in robes and arms, watch the ball fall on TV.

I envision her scent upon my bed.
Long hair, long legs and hips that bled.
A second step and I stuttered a groan.
A third and she looked at me and me alone.

This woman in black IS my destiny.
Perhaps black hats, black onyx rings and black lingerie.
Now it's time for dreams to be put to rest.
Take my pounding heart from my sleeve and
Put it back into my chest.

I sensed a smile though it was hard to see.
Her cab came and, she paused, glared at me once more,
She got in, and then there was only me.
