This story scared the crap out of me while I was writing it! giggle.....

Tentacles of fear wrapped tightly around her throat, suppressing her silent scream! On this blackest of nights, evil permeated the dank air; her tortured mind numb with fright! The dark, country road twisted and turned like a snake, coiling itself around its victim! Tall trees cast eerie shadows into the night, concealing gruesome creatures lurking silently in the darkness, awaiting their prey! Her best friend alleged the rewards would be bountiful, for those who dared traverse this road to hell! Accepting the challenge, she inched her way along, her body trembling, checking behind her, and indeed all around! One lone streetlamp halfway down the road beckoned her to its comforting light. In the welcoming glow, she pondered her next move. Eyes straining into the shadows she saw the dim yellow light on the front porch. Her decision made, she hurried along lest her courage fail her! Too late to turn back now! Besides, her best friend would mock her! Reaching the end of the road, she breathed a sigh of relief. The walkway, a tangle of vines and dead branches, concealed unimaginable ghouls reaching out to touch her ankles! At her knock the weathered door slowly creaked open, “Trick or treat”, said a squeaky little voice that didn’t sound at all like hers. She couldn’t see his face, but his eyes she’d never forget! Dressed as the grim reaper, he silently reached into a deep vat beside the door, dropping a large object into her loot bag. The weight of it nearly ripped the sack from her hands! Apparently her friend had been correct! Pointing to the road, he slammed the door in her face!
Suddenly the scream she’d been suppressing, ripped from her throat as she fled!
Feet barely touching the dirt road, she narrowly avoided tripping in the deep potholes! It had been a dare; her friend didn’t think she’d do it! She couldn’t wait to see her face tomorrow! Back home, safe at last, she washed away the remnants of her witch’s makeup before settling down on the bed to check out her loot. Dumping the contents onto her white comforter she wondered if the reward was truly worth her journey into terror that All Hallows Eve. Lifting a plastic bag the size of a bowling ball out of the pile of loot, she untied the red ribbon fastened tightly at the top. Turning the bag upside down she shook it. A stream of crimson spilled onto her bed, along with the head of her best friend!

Annabel,
A creepy tale! I like the twist at the end. Awesome descriptions along the way. I think every writer aught to be a poet first. Your details are fantastic. Great:)

Never expected your tale to 'head' in this direction!

Yaght! The head of her best friend? You certainly pulled this one out of the deep recesses of your scary mind. I wouldn't read this one with my morning hazelnut coffee. Good story, my friend.

Oooh! You have a sadistic streak in you, Anna, that I never knew. But Anna! We hardly knew ye. You got me at the end, I will admit that I had not the slightest idea what the Grim Reaper dropped into her goody bag. Good short story.
