From a little farm girl going to Kasper School in Texas during the 30's and 40's, I am taking a trip to Bolivia in S. America to see my son. Never would I have believed I would go that far from home, when I was a little girl.
I started to Kasper School in 1938. From the day I started to school I loved to read and I loved books. I wrote about the first book I owned in my first book, “Rainy Days and Starry Nights” which you can get at the Wilson County News. Miss Johnnie Carnes gave me the book. She was my first grade teacher. It was because of her and Mrs. Alfreda Poth, that I love books and writing.

When I was five years my aunt took me to Brownsville for a visit and then wound up keeping me for four months, and wouldn’t bring me back to my parents. After my mother threatened to get the sheriff, she brought me home. That was the extent of my world travels; that is until I grew up and married.

As I grew up on the farm my life just extended to that part of the world, the Kasper community. It was a very small world. Once in awhile we did get to go to Floresville with Mother and Daddy on a Saturday, and went to the picture show at the Arcadia. So it extended as far as Floresville.

When we went to the picture show, we had to sit through the newsreels before the show. I was fascinated. I saw places that I only read about in the newspaper, the San Antonio Light. Daddy and Mother read that paper religiously and kept up on world affairs. Then World War II came we saw the newsreels of the battles in the South Pacific and Europe. But it seemed so far away for us.

When I was about 12 years old, I spent a month at my grandparents’ house on Mesquite St. in San Antonio. So the extent of my worldly travels was just mainly to San Antonio. And that was not very often. My world was very small in my growing up years.

That is why I am so awed and excited about my upcoming trip to Bolivia in South America! I am going down there with my granddaughter to spend a week visiting my son who lives there. It seems so surreal to me that a little schoolgirl from Wilson County is going so far off! (Although I have been to Toronto, Canada) I found out that Santa Cruz, Bolivia is 4009 miles from here, as the crow flies!

I still sometimes feel like I am six years old anticipating a great new adventure into an unknown world, but this time it won’t be just in books, or the newspapers, or newsreels, that I experience the joy of new things. It will be for real!
