Springtime yard sprucing can be tough work.

Ah, springtime. I look out my open door, see the sun shining, hear the birds chirping and after last week's rain, even the grass seems greener. Well, I call it grass, but it's mostly the weeds that are beginning to bloom. But it's spring!

So, I trot back to my room, change into my clothes, swallow down my luke-warm coffee, and dash out the door to the local Lowe's store. What a selection of young plants they have. And the flowers...wow! I can imagine a difference they can make to my blah landscape. There are stones, bricks and plastic borders. And even ways to put in a pond! There are bags of fertilizer, weed killer and all the garden & lawn equipment I can use to get my yard back on track. I make my selections, pay for my purchases, haul them to my car and with dreams in my head spinning, I return to my home.

Whew! The sun is beating upon me and the sweat is on my brow. My hands are dirty. It's even up under my nails. And my hands cramp and I have splinter wounds from not not wearing gloves properly. Even my back feels like it's been contorted somewhow. I just know I'll need Excedrin P.M. to knock me out later for a restful sleep.

I look at what I've accomplished, after weeding, digging, and plowing with a shovel in my 3 x 5 little plot of Zone A, the first area to be spruced up in my garden area. One lone plant finally rests in the required measurement, nestled within the fertilized, potsoil nourished, mother earth. One! Then I look behind me. There are twenty more little plants to go. Then I look at the time. I started this at 9:00 a.m. It's now fricking after 11:30.  One hour at the store and then two and a half hours just for one plant!! I'll never get this done!

One of my kids sails out the door, ready to go play X-box at his friends house.

"Are you having fun, mom?" he asks.

I scowl. Didn't he know better? Children should be seen and NOT heard!
