There I was
Begin a short story with the words 'There I was'. You can make the sentence longer for example "There I was, standing in the ..." Only rule is it must contain the words 'there I was' and 1500 word maximum. Have fun!
There I was.
Or at least that's what I thought. But by the time I came there, I couldn't find it.
So I found myself here instead.
I looked at some point in some distance and ran there.
But once more, when I stopped, I was here.
How can I be there, when all the time I find myself here?
John came towards me and smiled: "What do you do?"
"I am trying to reach there. That's what you told me to do. You said: 'Go and dig three holes there.' Am I right?"
John looked at me. His eyes got some question in them, but he just said, "Yes I did."
"Then I want to go there."
"And what is the problem?"
"Come with me and see."
And we went there.
When we reached our destination, I asked John, "Where are we?"
"We are here."
"Exactly!"
"?"
"We went there but came here. I cannot get there."
John began to laugh. I patiently waited.
"Now I see what is your problem."
He went to the car and took something from there. It was wrapped in oil-stained newspaper. He unwrapped it and came behind me. I felt something enter my head. And then the enlightenment filled my head.
"John, now I understand."
"Of course. Sorry that I've forgotten that you are a soldier who is used to obey to the letter. But now, that I added some logic to your brain, you can easily understand what I meant by sending you to dig there."
"You are right, John. Now I understand. Logically, 'there' isn't a place but just a word. But I have another problem. What hole do you want?"
"?"
"Do you want it straight or bent? What form it should it be? How quickly do you want me to dig it? Where do I take all the earth from the hole? It is illogical just to go and dig. I have to understand every detail before I will dig. That's what common sense dictates."
I couldn't stop talking, enjoying the power of logic flowing through every sell of my empty soldier mind. It made me so happy, that I hardly heard John mumbling to himself on his way to the car: "It's the last time I buy any used robot for gardening."
I have to agree with georg...the last line just put a great big smile on my face too! your imagination is wonderful... I had to guess what would happen...and still wasn't sure...hehe.. hugs, lindalaw
Oh my! that was great, for a moment I thought you were talking about one of my berserk brothers.
One can't imagine the end, but get that philosophical punch about, place, here and there being just words.
The last line will get the reader floored with a smile on his lips.
