Review of Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl
Kevin Smith took a lot of grief over this movie, because it was not in the same vein as his other films. In other words, the language was not as salty, he hired a director of photography, and it was obviously a very personal and sentimental project for him to do.
Kudos to him, because it was a very sweet and touching film to watch. I am a huge Kevin Smith fan, and I loved watching this movie. Listen up fellow fans that may have avoided this film because of the naysayers. There is a lot of Kevin’s with and sharp dialogue present in Jersey Girl.
It also proved to be a highlighting of George Carlin’s dramatic ability. The chemistry missing between Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck in Armageddon is discovered in this film.
The story is about a man who loses his wife during childbirth. The kid survives, but the man’s career quickly dies as well. In fact, the moment of ignition is one worth seeing as the script takes a fun poke at the media.
So the man moves in with his father and takes on a job to simply pay the bills. Through it all, he is determined to resurrect his career. The relationship with his father and daughter is endearing, but it is when he the sweet and geeky grad student that the man’s eyes really begin to open to what his life is about.
Jersey Girl is a sweet film and extras on the DVD include audio commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, Kevin Smith’s "Roadside Attractions" which was seen on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and a conversation with Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck.
