Student starts new scholarship program to raise debates.

A new scholarship that has been initiated by a senior at Texas Tech called "The United White Persons College Fund" fuels debates on college campuses about racially-biased scholarships.
The Chronicle of Higher Education first reported the story Feb. 26, but they did not report the student's name. The publication reported that the anonymous person intended his scholarship to be "a jab at the United Negro College Fund, because the student believes the UNCF discriminates against white students." The article further stated that the student did acknowledge that the fund doesn't exclude any members from receiving scholarships. He also stated that he was hoping to spark campus debate and conversation about racial preference. "I would just dare anyone to take me to court and try to have our organization declared discriminatory and therefore unconstitutional," he told The Chronicle, saying that such a finding would raise questions about other groups, such as the UNCF.
According to The Chronicle, the student is aiming to raise $50,000 by the fall 2003 semester for the first scholarship recipient. He also declared that he would not accept donations or gifts from any white-supremacist groups.
In response to the action, Texas Tech's Black Student Association president is reported in The Chronicle as saying, "You can get scholarships for just about anything these days. I don't think the United Negro College Fund is a discriminatory scholarship. [...] He's just trying to get attention."
All attempts to contact the people associated with the scholarship failed, and Texas Tech does not offer any details about it on their Web site.

Our government does little to help anyone with higher education - beyond forcing the least well-educated and bankrolled into enlistment in the military (sorry, my own personal gripe), so scholarships are needed. I definitely have a problem with this one, if it becomes "legitimized" by Texas Tech. Yes, take this kid's money, give it to someone in need - he is probably right that it couldn't be challenged. But if Texas Tech in any way looks at color when awarding it - hmmm... I wonder just who gets to do this? If HE gets to make the award, TT would be well advised to wash their hands of it. Very interesting. Perhaps you could email TT and state interest in applying for it? Actually, although it seems belligerent in intent, it might just prompt increased funding to the UNCF. Please let us know if you learn more.
