A behind-the-scenes look at what I did to start building my website.

For over a decade or so, I have been laid off from SIX jobs (16 years service)...all for legitimate reasons such as companies closing; defense cuts; down-sizing, etc. With all the stress and depression in my life, it was an awful time for me! Because of this, I knew I wanted to put up a home business for my future, and I could do that on a website, to work for me all the way to retirement and beyond.

Like so many millions of people back in the Dark Ages (2003), I was "wet behind the ears," when it came to knowledge about the WWW, the Internet and something called "websites!" Like anything else, it was going to take TIME to learn about the WWW and the Internet.

The failure of the dot.com's showed us all several years ago, that tens of thousands of dollars could be put into a website business...and if nobody shows up...SEE YA! The name of the game here is TIME...it's going to take TIME for people to learn how to use the Internet for their personal and business use, etc.

Television and cable-television didn't just fall out of the sky, and become successful over-night! Many of us couldn't even afford a television set in those days! It was going to take TIME for Internet commerce to develop. Heck...back in the Stone Age, (2003) Internet financial tractions were not even safe, as they are in 2006. I can see why the dot.com's failed! The Gold Rush didn't last long...did it?

Although I wanted a home business in the worst way (because of all my job losses), I knew it wouldn't happen any TIME soon. I was as green as a head of cabbage, and I had a lot of learning to do. Because of this, and because I've been in the humor business most of my life, I decided to put the "business website idea" aside, and go with an "entertainment website" instead. This way,

I could learn what all had to be done in the business side of things, as my entertainment website grew...so that's what I did! TIME...it was going to take TIME! In the year 2006, so much of the technologies are changing at a dizzying pace, that all of us are having to learn something new all the time. But, I'll share with you some of the ideas I had in building my website, and ideas I have for the future, etc.

* The KISS Principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid) To show you I'm not the fastest horse in the race...when I first came online, I thought a cursor was a person who cussed a lot; I thought a megabyte is what is done to a slice of pizza; a DVD? An advanced form of "VD!" So, as you can see...I'm not playing with a full deck! Whether it be carving a piece of wood; coaching a Little League baseball team, or building my website...I've always subscribed to the KISS Principle...keep it simple, stupid!

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."  Leonardo da Vinci

Building my website is as simple as it gets...with simple tools and a simple mind! (ME) This piece was published in the Women For Work newsletter, and a few days later I got an email from a woman named Darlene and she writes:

"Hi Jer...I just wanted to thank you for your article, "Building My Website...One Brick at a Time." That was exactly what I needed at this moment in time. I have created a simple website (almost finished). I've learned the basics of what I have to learn, but nothing fancy. Because I surf so much, I see a lot of fancy, nice pages. I had begun to compare mine to all that I was seeing, and I was starting to think that mine were not fancy enough. I was stressing at the thought of "learning more," before I could move foward, delaying it even longer. I've been steadily working on my site for about 7 months and working on the idea for over a year now. The relief I felt when I read your article, has put me back on track...working on my simple but quality site. I will stick to my plans to learn more, as I am able, and only make changes if there is a good reason to do so. You made your point in a simple, straight-forward way, and I thank you for the encouraging article...Darlene

"In character; in manner; in style; in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity."  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

* Website/email name: Right from the beginning, there was no consideration to put my name on my website or on my email address. "Can't I get any more creative than that?" I ask myself? Does anyone know Jerry Aragon? Of course not! Does anyone care? Of course not! My list of names back then consisted of short, catchy names that I hoped people would REMEMBER. So, I chose humordoctor and humordoctormd. One of my websites at Homestead (host) is named "laughdoctor." Have you ever met somebody for the first time, and as soon as they left...you forgot their name? Two of the cutest names I've seen on the Internet are Big Mouth Linda (writer) and Mzzz Brat...aren't they cute? I will always "remember" these unique and funny names.

* Writing skills: I think writing well on the Internet is crucial for success at anything. For over 18 months, and in my 40's at the time, I completed three writing courses: Writer's Digest course; the National Writers Club course and a creative writing course at the University of New Mexico. One of the best things I've ever done for myself. (38 of my 48 articles have been published on other websites)

* Resume-building: Always my top priority. People are successful and have followers because they're successful at something. * Corporate Sponsor: From the time I stared at a blank screen, and started to build my website, getting a corporate sponsor for my site at some point in time was a goal and still is. But, I knew it was going to take time. Getting traffic to my site was and is a big problem; resume building was going to take time.

* Taking chances/ideas: As a woodcarver, I'm out of the art and craft world, and I have no background in writing whatsoever. And, I've sold almost everything I've ever made, because I have taken chances (in part) with my ideas. (I've also eaten a lot of "crow" too!) Examples: Jerry Aragon MD (Mentally Disturbed) Jerry Aragon CEO (Chief Executive Oddball) See Article; Taking Chances With My Ideas.

* Article directories: Part of building my website, is getting traffic to visit. The primary way I have chosen to do that, is to write articles and post them (free) on article directories. Search engines have a never-ending appetite for adjectives and nouns and what-ever (YUK) And they can have their fill and gobble up all my articles...one after another...I'll just keep them coming! Now, that my "entertainment website" is successful, I can start looking at a business or writing site. After all, I'm soon to be one of the greatest writers the world has ever known! (it's getting deep, Jer, it's getting real deep!) Strategy for the future?  KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID!
