Highlands University is a small school, located about 150 miles northeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA) where I live.  So, when I attended the school, I lived in the dorm (Salenger Hall).  At the time, most of the students didn't have a television set, because they were not affordable.  So, for our music and news, we listened to the radio. 

It was the week before Thanksgiving, and most of the students were preparing to go home for the long week-end...except me.  I had fallen behind in my school work, and I decided to stay for the week-end, so I could get caught up and prepare for the upcoming exams, etc.

It was about 11:20 on a Friday morning, and my roommate and I had just finished our morning classes, and we were back in the room, cleaning up, and preparing to go to lunch at the dining hall at 11:30.  A couple of pals from next door, came by and joined us, and we would all go to lunch together.

All of a sudden...I heard something on the radio that caught my attention...something like President Kennedy had been shot...or something like that!  I yelled out at the guys to quiet it down and to listen...something happened to President Kennedy! 

We all listened to the radio intently.  It didn't take long to find out that President Kennedy had indeed been shot in Dallas, and it didn't take long for the four of us, to scamper out of the room, and down the stairs and across the campus, to the Student Union Building, where there several television sets! 

When we got there...there were hundreds of students watching television and the latest news coming out of Dallas!  In looking around the room, all I saw was dis-belief on the young faces!  Shock...blank faces...and tears coming down the faces of many in the room, etc.  Upon hearing the news, I felt hollow and empty inside myself!

How could this happen?  How could this happen in a civilized society?  Or, maybe we were not a civilized society after all, etc. Dozens of students watched the television intently, as the news came out of Dallas!  Glassy-eyes and stunned looks were everywhere...not a dry eye in the room!  I think the word, "numb" was best to describe what was happening, and we were all numb and felt so helpless, as to what was happening thousands of miles away!

How could the President of the United States be shot to death?  I think we all had that question in our minds at the time!  I remember a young reporter at the time, named Dan Rather, was doing the reporting for CBS news, and Walter Cronkite was the anchor back in New York.

There was crying and sobbing going on everywhere in the SUB that awful day!  And, you couldn't blame anyone for coming apart at the seams...as tears were streaming down my face, too!  I really didn't know what to do for any of the other students, except to comfort them if I could!  How could this happen?

There were two other reasons why this added to the tragedy of the time...the holidays were around the corner...Thanksgiving and Christmas.  And, the fact that there two little kids in the White House...Caroline and John-John were about 5-7 years old, and they were adored by the American people...and now they didn't have a father!  A castrophe was unfolding before us that ugly day in Dallas!  Over the years, I have seen dozens conspiracy therories, much too detailed to go into here. 

THE WARREN COMMISSION REPORT:

Stated that Lee Harvey Oswald was the killer of President Kennedy and acted alone.  More than 80% of the American people believe the report is seriously flawed, and I don't believe that Oswald was the lone killer, either!  70% of the American people believe that the Kennedy assassination was a plot...and not the act of a lone killer!

In 2003, I saw a documentary on PBS, which was a behind-the-scenes look at how all this matter came about in the assassination, etc.  The 1960 presidential race between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon was very close.  It was reported in the documentary, that Joseph Kennedy, the father of John and Robert Kennedy, went to Chicage, to meet with the Teamsters union, to try to get the Teamsters to vote for his son, John Kennedy.  A little bartering on the side, if you will. 

It showed Joseph Kennedy entering and leaving the hotel where the meetings were held.  In short...the deal was, that if the Teamsters would vote for John Kennedy and he became President, then the President (if elected) would lay off the mafia!   This deal was amazing to me, because I don't know how Joseph Kennedy, or anyone else, can go around making deals in smoke-filled rooms, and behind closed doors, in something that is so important.  That is, the election of the next President of the United States, etc.

The Presidential race was one of the closest races in history, and the Teamster vote might have pulled John Kennedy over the top...which is did!  After John Kennedy won the race against Richard Nixon, one of the first things he did, was to appoint his brother, Robert Kennedy as Attorney General of the United States.

Sometime later, Robert Kennedy began to conduct hearings on mafia activity in the United States.  The reader can see what's happening here.  Depending on what the deal was with respect to the Teamsters and the shady dealings with the mafia...there could be an interpretation of a betrayal here against the mafia, etc. 

Those who read this piece in 2008 and beyond, have to understand that the mafia in those days was a big deal; the unions were powerful and courted by Presidents; and Communism and the Cold War were in the big picture, etc.  Most of all this doesn't exist in 2008.

One thing is certain...if you betrayed the mafia back then, you could pay with your life!  And, maybe that's what happened to John Kennedy...whether it was knowingly or unknowlingly!  Maybe the brothers didn't even know what the father, Joseph Kennedy had negotiated with the Teamsters and the mob!  Maybe, John Kennedy unknowingly betrayed the mafia, and he paid with his life, etc. 

After I saw this documentary, this is the most plausible scenario I have seen in the last 40 years, as to who could responsible for the assassination of John Kennedy, and it cleared up the picture for me a little.  This is something I could believe! 

In my view, Oswald did not kill Kennedy alone, or maybe he did not kill Kennedy at all.  I believe it could have been one of three things;

1) the US government acted alone and killed President Kennedy; (CIA/FBI)

2) the mafia acted alone and killed President Kennedy for the betrayal I mentioned earlier;

3) A plot by the government and the mafia conspiring together to kill President Kennedy! 

In my view, Lee Harvey Oswald was just convenient...and he was a scape-goat (a patsy, as it was known back then) for the government!

For the first time in my life, and I hope for the last time...I was able to see somebody actually get murdered on live television, when Jack Ruby (thought to be in the mafia) shot Oswald before millions of television viewers!  Another unthinkable act, which added to the chaos of the time! 

MY TWO-CENTS: 

The fox guarding the chicken coop:  Do you really think that government officials can investigate other government officials...be objective, to get the truth?  (Laugh here until your sides hurt!) 

In the year 2008, the U.S. Congress has earned...yes earned...its lowest rating in credibitlty and trust from the American people which is a shame!  The people in Congress are nothing but a bunch of self-serving, over-paid greedsters only looking out for themselves!  The only reason why there was more interest in 2008, is that a new face in government, might bring new hope, into this dismal administration and a waste of a Congress! 

And finally...I don't care how many Commissions the sitting or any other President appoints to get the truth in this Kennedy matter!  As long as the finger is being pointed at Lee Harvey Oswald...who is a dead man, and never got a chance to defend himself...the cover-up by the government will continue...period!
