It's one thing to lose weight...it's quite another to keep that weight off! I lost 40 pounds in 2001, which took me about a year to do. I think it was harder to keep the weight off...than to lose it in the first place!

As a 23 year old, I quit smoking in 1970, and took me about a year to do.  I think it was harder to fight off the temptation to go back to smoking...that to quit in the first place, etc.  In 2010, marks my 40th anniversary of quitting smoking...and never going back to that nasty habit!

As I said earlier, I lost 40 pounds in 2001...and 2010 marks my 9th anniversary of losing the weight was easier...than keeping it off, etc.

Appearance: Some people don't care about how they look...but I do.  And, I care about my health, too!  When I went from my normal weight of 170 pounds in 2001...to 210 pounds...I didn't want to be looked at as a lard-ass...so I knew very early on, that the weight had to come off!  For some people...looking like any old lard-ass is fine with them, etc.

With over 150 articles in my portfolio as of March, 2010, I wrote the following piece on weight loss in the fall of 2006.  This piece has been #1 at three different sites...for the past three years!  Amazing!  Frankly, I don't know the reason why...maybe it's because losing weight is a popular subject today.

Article title: Here's the Skinny On How I Lost 40 Pounds;
http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewarticle.asp?id=26219

Roller-coster ride:  After I lost the 40 pounds...the next 3-4 years were difficult and frustrating for me...going up and down...up and down in weight, etc.  It was so frustrating...I could scream!  From 170 in weight...to 180 and beyond...back to 170...and back up to 180 and over!  This went on for the next four years after I lost my initial weight.  So, how could I fix the problem?

Life-style changes; At the time, I had no idea as to how to deal with this problem.  All the ups and downs were difficult for me, etc.  I knew at the time, it would take a life-style change...but what?  How? I finally figured it out...but it took time to be sure...about a year.

I think everyone should be an advocate for themselves.  The individual has to go out and do some of the leg-work and research, etc.  If you rely on all these 'quacks,' who call themselves doctors...you could be in the soup!  All doctors do...is prescribe...prescribe...and prescribe more and more pills.  The doctors don't have to take all those pills...YOU and I have to take them.  The more pills they prescribe...the more money they make...you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that!

The more pills you take, the more likely you will ruin your colon; liver and kidneys, and no telling what else, etc.  What worked for me in this matter, took several months to get the answer.  Humans don't need to eat three meals a day to survive!  Heck...there are people around the world surviving on a hand-full of seeds and less, etc.  American's are spoiled!

So, why couldn't I cut out a meal a day?  Lunch, for example...it's worth a try.  I'm the kind of person who has to have breakfast in the morning...so I decided to do without lunch and make some time arrangements.

I'm an early person, and I usually get up in the morning at 4:00 AM.  I decided to have a combination of lunch and dinner around three in the afternoon!   My day ends around nine in the evening.  Why would I want to stay up and watch all those over-paid millionaires on the late shows?  I do my best creating in the morning.

After a few months...I knew I was on the right track...it was working!  I was staying steady at 170 pounds...and loving every moment of it!  Five years later, I still weigh 170 pounds...and I haven't seen 180 pounds in years!

Diabetes:  I've known three people who have died from diabetes, which is the #5 killer in the United States.  All three, including one of my aunt, went blind and had a leg amputated before they died...all young in their 50's!  No thanks!  Because I get a blood test and a physical exam every year, I noticed that my glucose was elevated for the past few years, so I was not surprised with the blood sugar touched and went over the line of diabetes, etc.

this was going to be another challenge for me, which would involve sacrifice and change of life-style if I were going to win the battle, etc.  Like my mother, I have a sweet-tooth, and I've always had candy, ice cream and sweet things around me!  But, with the news of diabetes in the middle dof 2008...it all went out the window!  Now, I would have to learn more about diet and carbohydrates, etc.  Exercise was not a problem for me, because I've been jogging and lifting weights since 1986.

At the time, I was at 170 pounds and exercising regularly...how could I have diabetes?  There has to be a reason, and I pointed the finger at sleep deprivation, and the reader can go to the following article I wrote in the middle of 2008 entitled;

Sleep Deprivation and Diabetes;
http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewarticle.asp?id=40122

Eighteen months of pricking my finger and gathering data for me and my doctor followed.  In January 2010, my doctor had good news for me.  The average for the monthly finger-pricking started at about 162 and over the 18 months came down to an average of 130; the A1C was at 6.8 when I started...and now it had fallen to 6.1.  I have another doctor's appointment in July, 2010, and my doctor told me if the A1C would be between 5 and 6, I would be in good shape!

It is my opinion, but I don't think many Americans know the meaning of the word sacrifice.  Too many pill-poppers in this society...of one flavor or another, etc.  There are so many chemicals in this nation...why do you think there are so many liver failures; kidney failures; colon failures and no telling what else fails because of too many chemicals, etc.

If an individual problem is going to be solved and the battle won...it's going to take work; will power; sacrifice and determination, etc.  My days of listening to the excuse-makers; the whiners and dreamers of the world, ended many years ago!

It took my three years to solve the weight problem, and then when I came up with a 'possible' solution to the problem...it took many more months to find out if it would work or not.  Everyone knows that the more weight a person carries...the harder it it on the heart!  You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that!
