Pain is pain...and does not discriminate...and can attack the young...the old...and everybody in between...of all races and colors! At the age of 65 in 2010, I have suffered from head pain for the better part of my life! Ever tried to sit through a class in school and learn anything, with a headache ripping at your face?

During my 65 years on the planet, and like everyone else, I have suffered from the usual pain from a toothache; an earache; the pain of ulcers for a couple of years; and in 1988, I passed a kidney stone, etc., and the average pain of a headache during my life, etc.  But, the champion of all pain...is the migraine headache, which is relentless in its pounding of one side of the head or the other.  In my case, I got all my migraine headaches on the left side of my head (temple area) and never on the right side.

The migraine headache has such a terrible reputation for throbbing pain, because of the way it works, etc.  That's because the migraine has the symptoms, that other kinds of pain don't have...that is...the migraine is tied to the beat of the heart.  And, everytime the heartbeat increases...the pain increases...the slower the heart rate...the less pain!  Therefore, most people cannot stay on their feet with a migraine...they have to find a place to lay down and keep that heart from pounding faster and faster, etc.

From: Blatman Pain Clinic.com;  Headaches are catagorized into different types according to their characteristics.  They can vary in severity from mild...to severe and disabling.  Some seem to start in the back of the head, and others feel like they come from the sinuses, etc.  They can last from a few moments, to several days.  Some people have a headache everyday!

"Every head has its own headache."  Arab Proverb

That was me...I had a headache everyday for years...of one severity or another.  If the headache was of the mild to weak variety, I could get through the day.  I could function through the work day...but if the headaches were strong and painful...that was a different story!  This was a problem at a very young age, and I knew I had to find the solution!

From: Wikipedia.com; The most common types of headaches are the 'primary headache disorders' such as the tension-type headache and the migraine.  They have typical features...migraine, for example, tends to be pulsating in character, affecting one side or the other of the head associated with nausea, disabling in severity, and usually lasts between 3 hours and 3 days.

"The more domains there are...the more headaches I have."  Steven Hartman

It all started for me, back in 1955 when I was only ten years old.  My father's company was having a company picnic in the near-by mountains, which were the Sandia Mountains...with an elevation of 10,600 feet, and support the longest  tramway system in North America.  There are plenty of places to get hurt in these rugged mountains, etc.

The picnic had the usual stuff...softball; horseshoes; hot-dogs; hambugers; ice cream and horse-play, etc.  After fooling around for awhile, me and a couple of friends decided to play 'King of the Mountain,' and climb a near-by hill.  As it turned out, this was a big mistake on my part!

Anybody who has done any mountain climbing, knows that it is easier to climb the mountain...than to come back down the mountain.  But, we were a bunch of ten year-olds...what did we know?

The climbing of the hill was pretty easy, and we all got to the top without any problems.  But, coming down the hill was another problem, and we all had problems right away!  The steepness of the hill made it difficult; the loose sand and gravel; sharp rocks everywhere, etc.  It was not going to be easy to get down off this hill, without having an accident by one of us, etc.

The farther I got down the hill...the faster I went...and the faster I went...the more likely I was going to fall and hurt myself on the sharp rocks!  Once I got going, it seemed like I couldn't stop...and I tried to grap anything I could...branches; weeds; bushes...anything to slow me down...or to keep me from falling, etc.

We didn't go down the same way we went up the hill, so there were more sharp rocks to deal with on my way down!  I knew I was going to fall and get hurt...it was just a matter of time!  I was at a point where I lost almost all control...and I could not control my speed anymore!  I kept running faster and faster...seemingly out of control!

And, than I came to a sudden stop!  I crashed...head first...into the back of a pick-up truck parked at the picnic grounds!  I hit the back of the truck hard with my head, and I rolled over onto the ground in pain!  It felt like a lightning bolt had gone through me, and struck throughout my body...paralyizing me!

I knew I was in trouble, as I nearly blacked-out from the collision!  People from the picnic came to help me, and as I lie on my back, all I remember seeing were all those vague, fading faces looking down at me!  I felt like I was near death!  All the breath was knocked out of me, as I lie there on the ground!

"When life becomes a headache, the only painkiller is time."  Dedrick Pitter

For me, it was all downhill in learning and education after the accident!  You see...my father was one of those medical-phobics, who was afraid of all medical people/instruments, etc., and he never visited a doctor in his 81 years.  As evil as he was, he never believed in taking his children to the doctor, either.  So, I was never taken to the doctor after the accident, and my father looked the other way, despite pleas from my mother!

Despite my young age, my life, my learning and my education all went down hill and everything became more difficult in the future.  Because things were not fixed in my neck and upper spine area, I began to suffer from continous headaches; nose-bleeds; high-blood pressure; loss of memory; loss of confidence and self-esteem, etc.  My life was a real mess for a long time!

Throughout my school days, I was at the bottom 25% of my class regardless of the grade.  I was never a good student in school...but, it wasn't because I was stupid...it was because of all the medical problems I was having because of the accident that were not fixed!  Because I didn't have a good memory after the accident, it would be a long fight for me to get through school, etc.

I had to work twice as hard to get through elementary school; middle school; and high school, but I did it!  I had to attend a small university to raise my grades, but I did that, too, and I finished two years at the University of New Mexico.  At the time, the Viet-Nam war was in progress, and the draft was a real possibility, so I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.  Four years later, I got an honorable discharge, but the entire was a struggle for me to learn what was going on.  The struggle with learning was beginning to take its toll.

I think one of the most important qualities a person can have is 'good memory.'  Good memory will start with your first job, as you must remember the instructions your boss gives you.  If you don't remember those instructions...you could be looking for another job, etc.  Good memory has always been important to everyone.

If you think back to your old school days...who were the best students in your class?  It was usually the students who could take the best notes and had good memories, right?  They would usually pass tests easily...

"I'm very brave generally, he went on in a low voice; only today I happen to have a headache."  Lewis Caroll

While my peers were completing their military, getting their degrees and buying a house, I was nearly homeless and struggling to stay on my feet, etc.  I went to doctors for years in the military and to my family doctor, to see if I could find the answer without any luck.  By the time I was 30 years of age, I was at the end of my rope!  I was a scrawny-looking; anemic-looking person with blood-shot eyes and seemingly no future, and about 118 pounds!  I was in a desperate situation!

In 1976, the city of Albuquerque, N.M., was about 360,000 in population, and there were only two chiropractors in town.  They used to be called 'quacks' in those days.  But, I was desparate, and I had to go to one, to see if they could help me!

Eight years later:  I have to make a very long story short for the purpose of this article.

For all you excuse-makers out there; pill-poppers; mama's boys; mama's girls; cry-babies; whiners; people of self-pity; people with no determination; people with no will-power...need not apply...these type of people don't have what it takes to get well!

For those of you out there who have an open mind and listen to others; and do have the tenacity, determination and will-power to get well...this is for you!  I'm not a doctor, so I will not give any advice, but I will tell the reader what I did to get my health, etc.

Open mind:  My father was the worst for a closed mind.  If he popped a pill that night, he expected results the next day.  There's no magic, here...

Keeping a journal; Because of my terrible memory problems throughout the years, this is what did it for me...keeping a journal to see how I was doing.  It gave me the confidence as I was doing better and better throughout the years.

Follow doctor's instuctions; I quit smoking in 1970; lost 40 pounds in 2001 and I've never done drugs and I don't drink.  I've jogged 15 miles a week since 1986, and in September, 2010, that translates to over 17,000 miles.  The reader can sit on their  ass, or go out there and do something for yourself... or die...I really don't care!  (do we have an attitude problem, here?)

Patience: There's no magic doctor; there's no magic pill.  Everything takes time...

Determination: along with will-power; persevierence; commitment...you can't get any of these over-the-counter and a doctor can't prescribe them to you, either.

Prevention; I am still on my wellness plan...that is I visit my chiropractor three times a year; I get a flu shot every year; I get a physical and a blood test every year.

After more than 8 years and 60 visits to a chiropractor, I went from a puny 118 pounds to 186 pounds!  I had color in my face and looked alive for once in my life.  In September 2010, I weigh 170 pounds...and I have not had a headache for over 20 years.  My blood pressure is almost normal; and I have not had a nose-bleed in years.

By the way...I've always done well in English class...maybe it shows...maybe it doesn't.  Good health to you...SEE YA!
