Grandma Moses was a embroiderer, and because of arthitis to her hands, she took up painting.  She started painting at the age of 78, and amazingly, painted over 1,000 pictures and sold her work all over the world...thus becoming a world-wide celebrity!  Her story should inspire anyone to get  get going...before it's too late...

Who says there isn't anything free anymore?  The following list of items are all free...and better yet...everyone in this society or any other socient has all these qualities.  All the person has to do, is to dig deep...find them...and most importantly...use them!  You can't get any of these over-the-counter or from your doctor...you can find all of them within yourself...all FREE! 

- ambition;  I don't like to be around ambition-less people...you know...the type that serve no purpose. The type that yawn their life and then are jealous and resentful at others, because they have accomplished something with their lives.   

- discipline; Discipline and trust may be two of the most important words in the world, as far as I'm concerned.  I was pretty disciplined growing up because my mother wanted it that way.  After four years in the military, I was really disciplined.  A person needs discipline in their life to accomplish certain things more that others, etc.  For example; I quit smoking at the age of 23 in 1970, and I have not touched tobacco in over 40 years; I lost 40 pounds in 2001, and I have never gained it back;  I walked/jogged 15 miles a week since 1986, and that translates to over 17,000 miles and so forth and so on...

- passion; I don't think a person can do much of anything well, unless that person has a passion for it.  I could never be a good cook, because I don't have a passion for cooking, etc.  Although I'm in writing, I could never be a good journalist or reporter, because I don't have a passion for it.  I'm good in humor, because I have a passion for it, and I've been in the humor business for about 55 years. 

- determination; We've all heard the old saying, 'winners are never quitters...and quitters are never winners.'   Many people are quitters...they don't see anything through...

- commitment:  A commitment is a promis to yourself.  How many times have you seen a person make a New Year's resolution, and break it a few months or weeks later.  This is not a disciplined person.

- perservierence; There's no such thing as a magic pill; a magic doctor; or an over-night success!  Everything takes time and patience!  Try to tell that to a pill-popper like my father!  He would take a pill, and expect to be sun-shiny the next day.  I don't think life works that way.  Do it over again and again and when you've done it over again...do it over again.  Edit, edit, edit...it is said in writing.

- problem-solving; Life itself brings us all problems that we have so solve.  If we don't solve those, we pack up and quit!  I think the problem I worked on in the arts, was about a year, and when I solved the problem, it gave me a certain kind of joy.  I was a woodcarver for over thirty years, and one of the first pieces I carved, was a wooden octopus.  It was on display at Octopus Car Wash for awhile.  But, when I wanted to photograph it in a seascape...that became the problem.  I had no idea at the time how to make a seascape.  I finally got the answer, and the seacape and the photo turned out beautifully.

 Confidence: I do have a lot of confidence in myself, as I don't like to lose at anything.  Games; cards; golf; pool; ping-pong, etc.  I may lose, but you're going to have to beat me.  I wrote one article, in the ending went something like this...'I am so confident in myself, that I can walk on water...that is...if the pond is frozen over.' 

- Patience:  There's no magic dust...everything takes time.  When I quit smoking, it took me about a year and three tries later; when I lost the 40 pounds, it took me about a year as well.  And now, with the diabetes, I have the numbers (A1C) lowered, but it has taken me about two years, etc.

- creativity; It is said, that a picture is worth a 1,000 words, and rather than dwell on creativity and 'toot my own horn," I would rather give the link to my website, and let the reader decide for him or herself.

I printed my resume in the arts one day, and to my surprise, it was about 43 pages.  It would be silly to place it here...it would be like "tooting my horn".  So, in writing, and since this is a writing site, I just post my writing numbers, and maybe the reader, who may also be a reading enthusiast, can get some information to use.

- attitude; a can-do/positive;  It is said that the glass is either half empty...or the glass is half full.  We live in a country of choices...you can decide which the glass is.  I love to have positive can-do people around me, and I have no use for negative people, and I show them the door right away, etc. 

 - people of hate:  I don't like negative, ambition-less people around me!  You know...all the people who dwell on what they 'can't' do, instead of what they can do!  The people of jealousy and resentment...I call the 'little minds of the world!"  There will be obstacles in the road, in the form of all these people of hate...trying to minimize what you've done with your life and your work...so be prepared!

In 2001, and only a day after the tragedy of 9/11, I wrote this poem and it applies to everyone in 2010 and beyond.  The poem is entitled, 'You Can Do It" and it goes like this...

'Peer-pressure is not just for teen-agers!  The ugly face of peer-pressure, will follow us all to the grave, by those who want us to take a different direction with our lives.  So, decide what you want in life, and don't let anyone distract you from reaching your goals and your dreams!  YOU CAN DO IT!'
