When I started writing seriously, one of the best things I've ever done with my writing pieces, was to post them on an article directory.  This gave me the opportunity that just maybe...some of my articles would be taken from the article directory and published on websites on the Internet. 

Like many other writers, I was hoping to become a published writer...but I had no idea at the time, that this would happen...that so many of my articles would be showing up at so many different places on websites on the Internet.  Every time I see the list of where my articles have been published, I have to pinch myself to believe it.  And, what is so unusual, is that this amount is only HALF of my articles posted.  Of my 218 articles on hand as of December, 2010, only 98 of them are posted on the directory.  Needless to say, I am astonished at what has happened. 

As of December, 2010, I am preparing to post the other half of my articles on the directory, which will be about 115 more articles...and I hope they do as well as the first 98!  When I first started at the directory in 2006, there were about 22,000 writers listed.  In 2010, there are now about 348,000 writers listed, so there is a lot of pushing and shoving for the reader's time.  I'll just have to post the rest of my articles and see what happens.

There are hundreds of article directories, but I can only speak for one, because that's the only one I have posted my work.  I think it's a good idea for the young people and the beginners in writing to start here.  There's a good chance to get your writing pieces published, but there are many rules to follow.  There is a 'live' editor who will accept or reject or red flag your articles, if there is something wrong with them.  I the reader modifies their article, it again had to go through a 'live' editor and re-accepted.  If you can't get your articles published here...how are you going to get your articles published at the paying markets?

The rules state that website owners who publish articles, have to publish them 'as is' with the contact information at the bottom of the article. I can assure the reader, that with so many of my articles published...nearly all of them (99%) were published intact...'as is' and nothing was changed.  There have been just a few that have been changed by somebody...a title change or a few words in the body of the article...but for the most part, all my articles have been left alone.

Just because your article is red-flagged, doesn't mean that it is rejected.  The 'live person editor' will tell you what's wrong with your article, and you will be given a chance to correct the mistake and once corrected...your article should be accepted.

In 2010, I think this holds true at the article directory...and that is that writers are placed in three different categories after they are excepted.  Writers are accepted based on the quality of their articles...and that's why I express to the writer to follow the rules and neatness counts every step of the way, etc.

1 - Basic; This means that the writer can only submit ten articles;
2) Basic-Plus; the writer can submit only 25 articles;

3) Platinum status; The writer can submit any number of articles and there is no limit.  I was designated a platinum writer after I submitted the required articles.

Should the reader be interested in the free content market, I think one of the most important things that person can do, is to come up with and use a clever nick-name in all your contact boxes.  This way, you'll be able to find your articles out on the Internet.  Over the years, I have used the name of my website, 'humordoctormd,' and I have not had any problems finding my articles.

Getting into the paying markets in writing can be a confidence-buster.  It won't take long to get all those rejection slips, and that's one reason why I chose to start and stay in the free content market.  If I want to try the paying market, I can always do that when I'm ready.  One thing about the paying market...is that they want you to write the way THEY want you to write.  I don't want that right now...I want to write the way I want to write, without anyone looking over my shoulder.
