I've never written a book before, but I have always thought the title of an article and the cover of the book, is the most important elements in writing.

When I started writing seriously, in August of 2006, I would have been happy if I had written 50 articles or so. By Thanksgiving of 2013, I now have nearly 400 articles on hand...which is amazing to me.

Switching from PLAN A to PLAN B

Plan A;  I spent the last seven years writing nearly 400 articles in over 40 different categories;  What would come from all of this, could be a book or two or three.  But, I was not enthusiastic about writing a traditional book of 200 to 300 pages long.  The enthusiam was just not there.

Plan B; But, as technology developed over the last few years, and the POD advanced, this technology and the eBook got me excited about writing several eBooks, etc. This technology excited me, because I could now write the book myself.  This idea for several eBooks would never be possible, if my articles whould not have been doing well.

During the sever years that I have been writing articles, I have focused on the article title.  I think the title is the most important element of an article or book...OR eBook.  The title of anything such as a movie; or a poem; or a book, has to spark curiousity and interest in the project.  It is the title that will get the reader to pay the visit to see the writing work.

In the early days of my writing, there was no book in mind, so I focused on the titles of the articles.  I knew that the titles of the articles, would be one of the keys to success in writing.  I knew that the title had to be short; say seven words or less; The title has to give the reader some idea of what the article is about, and it has to be done in a brief way.

I work hard on the titles, and some I've written about 12 times, before the article is posted.  And, even today, I will change the article title, if I can think of a better one.  Take a look at a few of my article titles to see what I'm talking about.

Article titles;

- U.S. Congress; The Best Little Whorehouse in
  America;
- Here's the Skinny On How I Lost 40 Pounds;
- SMOKING SUCKS!  How I Quit Smoking;
- The ABC's of Vitamin D
- ATTENTION-GETTERS;
  mradorable.centurylink.net
- Have You Ever Kissed an AshTray?
- HOLIDAYS; Santa; Your Breath STINKS!
- SiteMap For the Hopelessly Lost (400+ Links)
- You Can Kiss My Blarney Stone...
- The 11th Commendment; Thou Shall Not Cook;

As the reader can see from these examples, you can see what the articles are about.  The article title doesn't have to ge funny or clever, but is has to tell a story in just a few words.  With writing nearly 400 titles over the last several years, this has given me lots of experience in writing titles for the books in coming years, etc.  The titles of my eBooks are as follows;

1) House Call;
  The Positive and Healing Power of Humor; I've been in the humor business for over 50 years, and in this ebook, the reader will learn to be funny just like me. (laugh, here)  Since I've been online, I've called myself The Humor Doctor.  So, the cover will have a Haunted House as the primary illustration...and since the Humor Doctor is going around the neighborhood, and unbeknownst to him, he has arrived at a Haunted House, and on the cover, he can be seen on the porch knocking on the door.

Website name; humordoctormd;

 2) STROKE; Take Care of Yourself...OR Else!  In May, 2012, I suffered a stroke, and I spent a month in the hospital and in rehab, learning to walk all over again.  I thought stroke were for old people, but I was surprised to see so many young people in the Rehab Center.  Ages between 30...40...and 50 years of age, so people of ages are prone to attack by a stroke.

3) Made in the USA;  (self-
  improvement in creativity and idea development)  I've always considered myself a good idea person...both good and bad ideas.  Everyone is creative...and so are YOU...and people are creative in different ways.

4) Writing For the Fun of It; Writing is fun, and this book is about anything and everything concerned with writing.  Lots of tips and hints in this book by a beginner.

5) Public Health Threat; (Groundwater contamination);
I currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we have had a jet-fuel spill at the local Air Force base, which threatens to contaminate the groundwater.  I've been following this issue for over three years, and there has been no movement one way or the other.

6) OVER-POPULATION; Who Goes? Who Stays?   Like it or not...governments around the world, are going to have to address this hot-potato issue...before time runs out!  I am not a fatalist nor am I a doomsdayer, but I am a realist...and, every government has to address this important issue.

I thought you were writing an article about book covers and not just touting your “success” with social media like LinkedIn. LinkedIn automatically sends out come-on invitations all the time, like Facebook, etc. to build their clientele. I think it's a dirty rotten trick and I refuse to join them.

I have a bit of a flair for art and design (designed my own website––it would be better if I knew XML and other Internet trickery), so I have always designed my own book covers. While attempting to do my fifth book, I ran into an impasse because the background photo had flaws in it. My publisher warned me not to use that photo but to buy one from a supplier. I found that same photo with the same flaws at the supplier. I chose another photo that I liked less and proceeded to make mistake after mistake, and had to pay extra because I couldn't get the cover right after multiple attempts over two months––what a delay!

Anyway, finally got that one done. So, for my last book of stories, I hired their nice young artist, acclaimed for his covers. After he sent me three variations, none of which I liked, I went ahead and did a simple cover in a day. It passed through my publisher with flying colors.

You might say I learned my lesson.
