But, now in the year 2013, the ballgame is starting to change in my mind. Why couldn't I charge a small admission fee to the visitor to see my work? That's the question...and would it work, and where and how would I do it. The answer; I don't know and I don't know...
I think the only people who can get away with this concept, are the best of the best in putting their websites together, and have something to offer the general public. I don't think a blogger would fit in on this. I know I wouldn't pay to read anything a blogger has to say. For the sake of this presentation, I will use my own website and writing site as an example.
If a website owner did this...that is...charge admission to view the work of the website owner, I think the price has to be kept down and affordable, or it would not work. In my own case, I would the concept of Sam Walton (Walmart), who used the principle of keeping the prices down and relying on volume sales. Let's say the afmission charged would be 50 cents.
Traffic; To Authors Den; FROM: August, 2006 to the PRESENT; 507,346
I think traffic to the website would be one of the top considerations of the plan to work. I would never have my host at Homestead Technologies do this, because the traffic at Homestead is puny, as compared to Authors Den. The traffic at EzineArticles.com, the article directory, is nothing to shout about, either.
For about a year at Authors Den, I kept tract of the traffic, and I was averaging about 3,000 to 4,000 hits a week. Now, there are those who may say...that is nothing but peanuts...and they may be right, but the success of this idea, will show up in the CONTENT provided by the website owner, and everything else is just TALK.
Here, in the United States, we live in a society of choices. And, so with this idea, I'm not talking about the host changing anything...but, the host could give the visitor a choice. It would be similar to a restaurant....with a "smoking" and "non-smoking" sections. The visitor would have a choice, as to witch he or she wishes to see, and I think this concept could be a WIN, WIN, WIN situation for all
With a split of the revenue at 50/50 everyone will benefit;
1) the Host will benefit from the admission fee and the revenue produced by the website;
2) The visitor will benefit, because he or she will know that the pay-for-view sites have already been screened/scrutinized by the Host and these sites are the 'best of the best' the Host has to offer. All the clunkers will remain in the FREE section; As it is now, almost anyone can put up a bunch
turkeys and call it a website. And, that's why I think blogs came about years ago...because they came from people who come up a little short on skill and talent...and have to keep it short, etc. (like writing a diary) Therefore, these people don't have a lot to offer...for an admission fee.
3) The (accepted) website owner will benefit, because he or she will share in the profits, and the revenue,etc.
There would be a 'screening' process in selecting who is accepted for the 'pay-for-view' Section. The process would be similar to a Jury System in the arts and crafts world, whereby participants in the show, are selected by the Jury process...who shows and who does not show, etc. Websites would be scrutinized and the turkey's would be sent back to the barn...This process is good for the visitor, because he or she would know that their time does not haS to be wasted on the turkeys.
Let's go to our fantasy world...our audition...because that's what this is. The website owner is putting up his or her website up for audition and it will either be accepted or refected. I'll use MY website as an example. The reader is on a committee of five judges, and you will get a chance to judge my website; Here we go...
