When I began writing my Werewolf series, I thought first about the story itself. Where did I want to take my reader? Who was to be the possessor of the devil's belt? And who would be the hero in my story?
"Lucifer would of course be one of the main characters the evil villan in this case." But who would be the one to take him on? I thought of using a masculine character at first the typical hero type, handsome, brave, a true warrior. "But then I decided no." Instead I would use just the average joe, nothing special about him, a man with common fears, weaknesses, not what you would describe as your typical hero type.
A working class man. But he would be a teacher, "no better yet a college professor." He would however teach alternative subjects. The Paranormal came to mind. The Rest of the story grew from there, a legend regarding a curse object known as the Wolf strap or Devil's belt.
The story along with my characters grew from there. I honestly was feeling a little sad when I finished the final book of the trilogy. I had grown to love the characters in my series so much, the books literally seem to write themselves. I felt as though I was simply along for the ride! And what a enjoyable ride it was at that.
I would find myself literally tearing up when a favorite character would meet their untimely death. My wife sandy would ask me. "Why do you kill off some of your favorite characters?" I would answer, because real life is the same way isn't it? I mean we go through life with friends parents, grandparents, and sooner or later we face the pain of losing one, and then another.
Their deaths always come it seems when we least expect it. Just like the characters in my books. This places a true sense of realism to the story and to the characters themselves. "I truly hope my readers feel that sense of realism in that same way. I wanted to make my characters alive and realistic." And as you grow to know and love them, the story will truly draw you in, as well as into their lives, their fears, their heartaches, their romance, the challenges they face. My Name is Garry E.
