Do you believe in luck? What makes someone lucky? Do we create a circumstance to get lucky or just does it happen out of the blue?
I attended a workshop called on Humor 101 with Darren LaCroix, Toastmasters 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, in January 2012. Darren started by showing us a video of his first comedy club appearance. He warned us that it would be bad and it was! If you had seen the performance at the club you most likely would not have gone to any of his future performances and would have advised him to give it up! The transformation from what he was to now is amazing. Some people might say he is lucky to be where he is now.
Darren emphasized that he had spent many hours reviewing many a champion’s speech to improve his skills. His desire, persistence and vision created the “luck” he now enjoys today. He took the first step and failed. He persisted and gave more performances despite his initial “failure”.
Do you consider some successful people lucky? There may be an element of luck; however, those people typically have shown lots of focus and desire. Part of getting lucky is facing failures, falling on our face, bouncing up and moving forward. There is always the first step required. If you desire to win the lottery, you need to buy a ticket first and then keep buying again and again despite your loss (failure). The poem below describes this situation further.

Perhaps luck has to do with what family you are born into.
Perhaps you are lucky
if you have inherited the good genes of your parents.
How did the famous musician
get lucky?
He kept composing music
even if it didn’t sound good at first.
How did the well known sports figure become lucky?
He faithfully continued to hone his skills despite the initial rejections.
How do the most successful people
get lucky?
They used their “failures” as stepping stones
to their eventual success.
What is luck?
Desire, faith and persistence.
