This discourse is a prelude or prologue to the various meditations, poetry, lyrics and interdisciplinary readings presented in the body of works that is at the heart of the Mutuality World Community Church.
What's in a name? For a certainty, more than is generally recognized by most people. My father named me "Uriah," which means "the light of Jehovah." Whenever I think about or hear my name I am reminded that "I am the light of Jehovah." I am not just a light in or of the world, but the light of God in the world. My name challenges me to not merely walk in the light but to be divine light.
After reading this discourse the reader is likely to have a clear idea about the name of this virtual spiritual fellowship called the Mutuality World Community Church. It is important to emphasize that in a society where aliases and initials rather than words are frequently used that it is highly beneficial to use the full name, Mutuality World Community Church for the reason I cited for using my full name.
"Mutuality: The Full Life Process," is the title of my 221-page hardcover book that was published 33 years ago. This had also been the title of my doctoral dissertation written three years earlier. "Mutuality" and "The Full Life Process" will be discussed after a brief discusison of "world," "community" and "church."
"World" refers to the expanse called earth in a terrestrial sense, i.e., of relating to the earth or its inhabitants both animated and inanimated. Also included in this meaning of the world is the extraterrestrial, i.e., things which originate or exist outside of the earth or its atmosphere. Included in this disscussion are both the planetary and interplanetary. The latter is likely to be where some alive humans will live in the future and where at present there are angels, spirits and souls of some people who previously were mortal human beings.
"Community" is not a geographical area separated by superficial characteristics, as the term is generally used. Community may be defined as a comprehending and responsive unity of interacting persons. This interaction may be in spirit only. It is a practice where in spirit- togegtherness people have a shared harmonious experience. Again, this may occur when the practice of community is in spirit only. This is somewhat like the statement, "There is no distance in love." However whenever and wherever possible the practice of community is demonstrated with physical interacton with other people. Community is a spirit that excludes nobody. It is undergirded by an attitude and disposition which subscribes to the principle that "no link in the human chain is any weaker than its strongest link." In community empathy and love bind people together in a way that each person cares about others as he cares about himself as an individual. This modality is not "I am my borther's keeper." It is "I am my brother's brother."
"Church" (Synagogue, mosque or Temple) as used here is a virtual spiritual fellowship which consists of people of faith, who are adherents of traditional faiths such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, as well as people of faith who are not connected with any organized religious faith but have a faith practice. Every human being was created with a soul that is capable of being propelled by faith. Although there may be local churches, synagogues, mosques and temples, and places of worship with other names, the true church like "religion par excellence," is one, the church universal, and includes people of all faiths whose faith-consciousness has enabled them to pursue God-consciousness. In a Christ-centered sense the church is the Kingdom of God. During his earthly ministry, Jesus often spoke of the Kingdom of God. Only two of his reported sayings contain the word "Church." Whereas the Chuch is primarily for worship, the Kingdom of God is a fellowship of righteousness, of love and labor, with that labor being a labor of love.
Now, we will focus on the terms: "Mutuality" and the "Full Life Process," both of which are essential in understanding the reason for the existence of the Mutuality World Community Church.
We begin with the "Full Life Process." Full Life is not a matter of longevity "per se," even though longevity is not only desirable, but attainable. It has a vital place in the life of a person. With a reasonable portion of good health the longer a person lives, the more he can contribute creatively and productively to the world, glorify God, do soul-completion work and add to the consciousness of the human race. However, full life has a fuller meaning than longevity. it is synoymous with quality life. Instead of the twofold division into conscious and unconscious, we need a fourfold division: the unconscious, the meaningful, the enjoyed, and the contemplated. When the enjoyed is suppresed or missing in the life of a person he cannot be said to have full life, even if he has reached three score and ten or eighty years. Full life is the epitome of beauty as is readily recognizable in nature.
"Process" is a useful concept to indicate a neutral series of continuities, and it does have the advantage of extension, like the abstraction of the endless line or the ongoingness of a stream that flows ceaselessly on. Indeed, a person living in process is in the flow. It matters not where he is along the process continuum or in the process, at a given time. Always, "this too shall pass." While God appropriately called the Cosmic Source, remains "the same today, yesterday and forever," creation is in the making still which is a process characterized by continuous change. Human beings and everything that has been created has a part in the evolution of the created and the "creation in the making still' phenomenon. That includes all that is extinct, including the dinasours, if they ever existed, or will become extinct and deceased human beings. Being in process can be described in the statement, "Don't swim, float." And by all means keep a strong faith.
Now the focus is on the long awatied definition and/or description of "Mutuality."
Mutuality, in essence, is the concept of
man as a responsible and by empathy-
possessed being, with his own happiness
as the practical and ultimate purpose of
his life, with creative expression as his
noblest activity, and love as his only
absolute. (Love is the good we do and
it alone when well served is always good
and right in every situatioin.)
Mutuality is a philosophy and theology in the sense that the existentialist Soren Aabye Kierkegaard was a philosopher and theologian. Mutuality consists of seven principles, two methods and a therapeutic procedure. The principles of Mutuality are: responsibility, freedom, love-power, creativeness, self-transcendence, commitment and enjoyment. The methods of Mutuality are: dynamic inisistence and altruistic pragmatism. The therapeutic procedure of Mutuality is "Psyhchomutuality," which is rooted in the principles of Mutuality and deals with the discovery or recovery of personality wholeness. It is love-therapy at work in an empathy-directed relationship arising from the expressed need to work through difficulties by means of love and understanding, which enables the client (not patient) to assume growing responsibilities and live a more satisfying and fulfilling life. In Psychomutuality each client is encouraged to arrive at his own solution to the problem of his own existence.
Every person, movement or system has a philosophy or a philosophy and theology, ideas and ideologies, be they relevant or irrelevant, motivate individuals and ideas, be they constructive or destuctive, manipulate and direct the course of or control individuals or groups. This is no less true for the religious or spiritual person of faith and anyone who is or will become an adherent of the Mutuality World Community Church. Perhaps, now it is obvious that this is a church without walls or spokesperson.
With others who are already involved in the Mutuality World Community Church, I enjoin you to celebrate and feast upon the offering of this virtual spiritual fellowship. This way of being can become a way for you to add to the consciousness of humankind. And so it is.
