How can anyone in America be surprised or shocked to observe America separating children from their parents?

Don't pretend like America  just started separating children from their parents.

When I was a teenager my Grandfather Benjamin F. Fields, born durnng slavery,  told me  what his mother told him about how her (now my) ancestors' children were separated from their parents.

In my book, "Grandpa Benjamin," by Uriah J. Fields, a novel about the author's Gandfaher, here is what my Grandfather told me, and I quote:

"My mother told mel....while fetching water from th Bimau River near their home  in Benin, West Africa, she and her husband were kidnapped by some English and American slave catchers. Their names were Baatsi and Ashanti Nkrumga. They had two small children who were named Munga and Akambi. Their  youngest child, only one year old, was at the home of Ashanti's sister and her husband when they were kidnapped and the other child was at the river with them. Before the slave catchers could take the child and elderly man  who had warned them about slave catchers in the area  took their child and ran away. Bastsi and Ashanti were unabe to escape.  These slave catchers chained one of Baatsi's feet to the foot of another kidnapped man's foot  and one of Ashanti's feet to the foot of another kidnapped woman's foot.  .... It took them many days, even weeks, to sail the Middle Passsge and make the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. The slave ship anchored in Charleston, South Carolina, where they were auctioned off and sold to the highest bidder. Just two days after arriving in Charleston Baatsi was sold to a slave owner in South Carolina and that was the last time Ashanti saw her husband.  Like their two children, he had disappeared from her sight forever. ..."

"Three week later Ashanti was sold and taken to Georgia by a slave owner who called her Elsie and told her that her name was Elsie. He also told her that he was her slave master. ... " (pp.18-19.)

About two years after Ashanti came to America, at the age of twenty-two, she gave birth to twins, a  boy and a girl. Her slaveowner, John Shambock, told her that he had named her children Andrew  and Isabella. He added, "all three of you are Shambocks, i.e., (with emphasis) slaves of Shambock!"

While still a small child,, about three or four, Andrew was sold to another slaveowner. Neither Ashanti  or Isabella would never again see him. Isabedlla remained with slaveowner Shambock until she was eighteen. She was fequently beaten and raped by both her slave master and his oldest son." (pp.20-21.)

Today,  in America, children are being taken from their parents, allegedly for using drugs or not being what some so-called authorities on what is good for children, and placed in foster homes or something less which is another form of incarceration.

Look at the enclosed photo and ponder the message my Gandfather told me when I was thirteen years old and you will have no need to be surprised or shocked when you hear that children entering the United States are being separated from their parents. If America does this to children born in America, what do you think America will do to children  from other countries or children born to parents who are illegally in America? Ponder this question.

(To read in detail what my Grandfather told me about children being separated from their parents and much more about how ancestors of African Americans were tortured during slavery and since, purchased, on line, "Grandpa Benjamin" by Uriah J. Fields from amazon.com, authorsden.com or from your local bookstore.")

Pass this link on to others who have a right to know the truth about "separation of children from their parents." They too will say, as you do, "What's new?"

If you want to demoralize and abuse people, all you have to do is take away their names, separate mother from child, and treat those people as subhuman.

You are right, Uriah, separating children from their parents in the United States is not new. It was condoned and prospered for nearly half of this country's existence and started much earlier than the so-called Declaration of Independence that implied freedom for only those not considered, slaves, was signed and backed by a revolutionary war. It took another war, 70 years later, and a pronouncement by the president of the United States, to give some freedom to so many. And, the right to hold onto their children.

The question of bad parenting and what to do with the children of irresponsible drug addicts and criminals aside, the unilateral separation of illegal immigrants from their children is something that needed to be stopped. There is untold psychological damage that needs now to be addressed.
