writers can be masters of their own
destiny ..... leading to a better
lifestyle all round .....

Hi folks,

.... some of us are physicists, some are plumbers,
some trade the markets, some are mechanics, some
are lawyers, some are housewives, some are social
workers and some are writers.

In ALL occupations, there's some people that will
excel, while there's others doing the same work,
that will struggle their whole lives, without
making a dime from their chosen work.

Choosing apparently "easy money" occupations,
like writing books or trading the stock market
MAY not be the answer to your prayers for
success .....

..... fact is, you just may not be destined
to be a successful writer, selling thousands
of books, to sustain a lavish lifestyle.

High-priced business consultants may not be
able to help you either ... but, a competent
business astrologer, may well be able to
steer you in the right direction.

Too often we look for the easy option in
life, whilst frequently, it is the extra
effort we make, in overcoming the obstacles
on the more difficult path, that will
reward us handsomely and give us the best
career satisfaction ..... whatever we do.

Sadly, some people NEVER find their niche
in life that will take them to the pinnacle
of a particular industry.

Others will be lucky enough to savour many
experiences, in many careers and industries,
BEFORE finally focusing on their natural
strengths to bring them the rewards that
they were meant to enjoy.

You have probably seen many instances of
people taking their hobbies more seriously
and turning their ideas into sustainable
careers.

They are able to achieve these ends, mostly
because they LOVE their work and are REALLY
passionate about doing the best job that
possibly can for their customers ... this is
also reflected in their careers, as they
progress forward, step-by-step.

Now, once we have determined, that we REALLY
have that burning passion for our work, the
assistance will be forthcoming ... but, ONLY
when we have knocked hard repeatedly on that
door, asking the right questions, about how
to progress further in our work.

Bringing that to the self-publishing scene,
there is nothing more daunting, than to have
a book that is not selling, especially for
new writers that are not considered one
of "the names" in mainstream publishing.

Thankfully, we don't need to be "a name"
today, to make an honest living from writing
books.

If we remove those obstacles from mainstream
publishing that inhibit our progress, we can
definitely build our boook sales to support
a modest lifestyle ..... and, if we write a
real winner, then we can DEMAND our own price
from mainstream market .....

..... and get it !~!

How, you ask?

First, identify those that seems to be
hindering your progress, including:

Agents, publishers, distribution chains,
big book stores, advertising reps, blah,
blah, blah.

..... NOW ELIMINATE them !~!

Sit down and draw up a business plan
of your own, around the resources that
you have at your disposal, to sell your
books ..... think radical here, but at
the same time, be sure that you have
an intimate undertsanding of your target
market AND sound knowledge of your
competitors.

For most selling books from the boot of
a car is NOT an option.

Be fair to yourself and take as much
time as you need to build a your business
plan ... 3-to-6 months even ... it will
be worth every minute, if you can use
this plan, as a blueprint for your future.

So, you have probably found that without
all those middlemen, that we previously
eliminated, it is going to take a lot of
extra effort on your part to achieve your
goals ..... but, the winners will be
saying, "so be it, bring it on".

To help you circumvent the mainstream
publishing system, we must maximise the
use of online resources on the internet.

Fortunately, despite what your agent may
tell you, making contact with your GLOBAL
readers has never been easier.

Epublishing has thrown off its shackles
and must surely rate, as one the most
successful online business ventures, today.

With my fourth ebook due for release in
October 2003, it is now somewhat less
daunting for me to launch a new book,
than it was 2 years ago.

In the past 15 months, my ebook readership
has grown from zero to a sutainable rate,
that has included sales in 16 different
countries ..... ask your agent, if he can
do that for YOU ...??

Here's some guidelines, that may be of
help to some writers, contemplating
taking their own steps down the
self-publishing path:

Write only about subjects that you are
passionate about and in which, you have
indepth expertise.

Get to know your customers, intimately
online, in forums like this or chat
rooms ... get to know their "hot buttons."
These are the emotional triggers that
you will be targetting, during the
marketing of your ebooks.

Likewise, with your competitors, keep
abreast of their new releases and their
marketing and pricing regime ... it will
all help you to fine-tune your own
strategy, along the way.

Develop your own business plan for
marketing on the internet ... set targets,
and deadlines, know your overheads and
plan to stay within your budget for
promotions and advertising and all other
costs, too.

Non-fiction writers will be heartened to
hear, that it is not necessary to have
extravagent graphics to make your book
saleable ..... readers would prefer the
pages to be packed with relevant
information, than glossy pictures.

Advertising can be kept to a minimum,
as you now have much more direct contact
with your readers.

Exposure in forums, like Authors' Den
may also be of value, where over half
a million visitors are recorded, each
month.

If you know you have a good product,
backed with sound knowledge and
expertise, then DO NOT BE AFRAID to
put a high price on your ebooks.

You have already done the hard work,
now it is time to be rewarded.

Finally, stick to your business plan
and you WILL be a winner .....

To answer your questions about ebooks:

Probably the best place for you to start
is the Google search engine ... just
punch in "ebooks" and you will come up
with bulk information about this form
of publishing.

Then, if you have some specific questions
about a particular issue, i will be only
too glad to help, if i can .....

For fiction writers in very competitive
fields, like your own, the advantages
of selling your work in ebook format
may only be marginal, though it will
help to fill the gaps between sales
of your hard copies.

For any writers to have a real edge
against their competition, especially
in the mainstream, they must be able
to accept the risk of TOTAL FAILURE
from the outset.

..... that's a HUGE commitment, but it
is one that we all take on as writers,
even unconsciously, when we write any
works for publication.

We can reduce the financial risk
somewhat, by publishing in ebook format,
since our overheads should be greatly
reduced.

For mainstream writers, there's always
the millions of other writers that
compete with us for the readers' dollar,
either online or offline.

To avoid that rat-race, one approach is
to write about a very specialised
NON-fiction and market it to a very
focused niche-market, worldwide.

In doing so, we have much more control
over the distribution and pricing of
our work, too.

..... any arena of life, that you may
be lucky enough, to have acquired
expert skills in to date, is a
candidate for subject matter of such
a venture.

Many people are thirsty for SPECIFIC
information on "how-to" achieve this
or that end result. If you can provide
a UNIQUE SLANT on achieving their
goals, then readers will gladly pay.

..... but, the caveat here is that
you MUST be able to deliver, what you
have promised to your readers (and more),
if you want to succeed.

In summary, self-publishing ebooks will
probably offer you benefits in cheaper
delivery options (by email or CD-rom)
and the opportunity to reach targeted
audiences worldwide ..... but, to raise
the price bar and maintain sales, at
the same time, will require a REAL EDGE
over your competition ..... something
that is very hard to achieve for most
writers, in the mainstream publishing
industry.

Self-publishing ebooks is not an easy
path, as you will be often clearing
obstacles, in your pioneering efforts.

Slowly, ebooks are gaining momentum and
with better technology, they will become
even more popular, in the future .....
