Easy, fun activities for Alzheimer's patients.

Every day the Alzheimer’s patient find themselves making mistakes or being unable to perform the way they once could before they developed the disease. This is so frustrating for them. It leads to sadness and even depression. So why not find activities that can make the person feel good about themselves and the world around them again. Activities should be easy but make them fun as well.

■ A visits with children or pets especially baby pets is a delightful activity.

■ A chat about the good old days brings a smile to their face. They love nothing better and can remember more of the old days than what they had for breakfast that day. Tests have proven that social behavior helps both physical and mental health.

■ Take a walk. The fresh air does them good and helps the caregiver relax.

■ Put some of their favorite music on. Sing and dance with them. It is a fun activity for them and for the caregiver as well.

■ What were their skills before the disease? Try out something that uses that skill if it is still in place. You need to be flexible. If one thing does not work change to something else until you find something that works well.

When providing activities for Alzheimer’s patients remember a few basic yet very important things. Be flexible. Go from one idea to the next until you find just the right thing that makes them happy and relaxed. Remember we are each individuals and have different likes and dislikes. That does not change because of developing a disease. Alzheimer’s patients are easily distracted and have a low attention span. Usually they will not stay with one thing for more than twenty to thirty minutes at a time. Keep the activity simple. Videos made for this purpose are often available at your local Alzheimer’s association. If not, they may be able to help you find one.

Another important thing to remember is that you want to stimulate their brains as much as possible. Try to maintain an adult level for as long as possible just be aware that as the disease progresses more youthful activities may be helpful.

Why not have fun times amid the stress and anxiety. You will be glad that you can remember back on the good times and these activities help you as well. You, the caregiver, need time and relaxation too. Don’t ever forget that. You can not help the patient if you are sick or depressed.
