Helpful hints for the caregiver.
As a caregiver you often feel like you are trying to be all things to all people. If you are both a parent of young children and a caregiver to your own parent it may seem as though there no longer is a “you.” With all of the chores and responsibilities that come with being a parent as well as a caregiver, quiet time to yourself seems to be something you can only dream about. Some of you even work full time which makes all you must do each day overwhelming to say the least.
What can you do? What options are there out there for you? Where can you find help? If you work full time, you may want to talk to your employer about company benefits that help for those in exactly your situation. Many large companies have resources at your disposal that you may not even be aware of. Then there are adult day care centers in some locations. That option takes a bit of planning but it is well worthwhile. The patient is not only well cared for but kept active. This does require paperwork and legwork on the part of the caregiver but it is well worth the effort. Once done, this gives the caregiver the opportunity to continue working or perhaps some free time to enjoy a good book or even a day at the spa. You have earned that and need it to help keep you in good health so you can continue to do all you have to each day.
Other option can be found through agencies such as your local Alzheimer’s Association, Catholic Community Services, Geriatric Services, Alzheimer’s Family Relief Program, in home services and support groups.
When your children, spouse or other friends and family ask what you want for Christmas or your birthday, why not tell them you want a day out at a spa and someone to care for your parent for the day. Perhaps someone to come in and clean your home. Don’t be afraid to pamper yourself a bit. It will help you to be in better sprits, thereby making you a happier and healthier person and one who can deal with their responsibilities a bit easier.
One of the most important things for a caregiver to find is a confidant. There are times when the responsibilities seem more than you can handle. You need this down time and if you don’t allow yourself time for it you may find yourself slipping into depression. You have such an awesome task. Don’t try to do it alone. Get help. You will be glad you did.
