I do not like operas

Professor Penwose

I do not like plays, operas, musicals, or anything of that nature.
I should not even use the term, “of that nature, since neither is natural.
Think about it, when was the last time you met someone walking down the street singing, (Not you the person?) I probably should have asked, when was the first time? In either case the answer is probably the same. If you have to ask, you don’t know. If you have to ask, “About what?” you don’t know that either.
Let us presume you are one of the minute few who have actually met someone bellowing a song as they strolled toward you. Let us even suppose they are dancing along the way. Maybe leaping on parked cars, or sliding on spilled oil, or singing in the rain with an umbrella that offers no protection from the wet.
Do you shy away from them as if they were a bit sissified?
Maybe a cop comes your way? Perhaps he sings too? A butcher joins in, and a baker, yatta, yatta, yatta, and even an alley full of singing cats.
Maybe a barber sings as he slits a throat or two? That is a giant step in the manly direction, but still sissied with singing.
Should you join in? That is up to you. I suggest staying clear of the barber and the muffin maid and the wares she made.
But if you do, and your stomach turns, you may be better off next time watching a manly natural movie like STAR WARS or MARS ATTACKS or one of the ROCKYs?
Manly always outshines Sissy.

Penwose Out.

I'm with you on this one. Opera and its cousin, the musical, has a long history perhaps going as far back as the Greeks. It may have been a way of interrupting the dialogue to enliven the audience with song. Songs tend to be remembered long after the dialogue is lost. I find that the songs from plays have become old favorites and I occasionally enjoy the singing of an opera song with the singer giving his/her all to the music and words, even if they are in a language I don't understand. For a few people with a lot of time on their hands and money, these social events have become part of their uppercrust, snooty culture.

Commoners like you and I just simply don't understand.

Bye, George,

Ron
