Are you familiar with this word…PERSNICKETY.

It is a funny word that you cannot say without a smile. If you can you may be deluminated which is another funny word I made up myself as I thought persnickety was by somebody else.

My mother used to use it a lot. She would say, “Don’t be so persnickety.”
We never knew what it meant, nor what we were doing, and figured it was one of those Pittsburgh words?
Just for the halibut I did a search and found it to be an actual word according to many dictionaries.
Obviously I wanted to know what it meant so I looked up SNICKETY.
It was nowhere to be found. Therefore “persnickety” is not “by way of snickety,” similar to how “personality,” is not “by way of sonality.” although senility comes close, yet there is no persenility?

I found that persnickety means, placing too much emphasis on trivial or minor details; snobbish or having the aloof attitude of a snob.

Two of the synonyms suggested were overfastidious, and fastidious, which are funny words themselves, with one needing a definition. If you wonder which one, explaining won’t help you. I looked up the definition and found, “persnickety.”

Persnickety was first documented in English in the late 19th century as an alteration of “pernickety,” a word that has the same meaning.
I must ask, if the word itself and the alteration have the same meaning, why change either?
I believe someone was being a bit persnickety, (or pernickety.)

I did find a meaning for snicklefritz which is another funny word and probably closer to what my mother meant to call me.
Snicklefritz (plural snicklefritzes) (US, especially Pennsylvania) A child, especially a mischievous, noisy child; especially as a nickname or term of endearment. Well, that was me. I’m glad my mother never called me that.

I do know people who are a bit snobbish who will now find themselves Persnickety. I hope they do not turn into a Snicklefritzes.
