Another delving into The Devil's Dictionary.
BAGEL BISTRO BASTINADO
I was looking for a word, beginning with B, that would serve as a third word for the above Bagel Bistro. My first stop took me to The Devil’s Dictionary. Once there I diverted a bit to see what IT meant?
There was no definition for Devil, which I found rather odd since it was the name of it?
Dictionary was there rather as I thought it would be…
DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.
Eventually I found a word suitable for my needs…Bastinado. Has any of you an inkling what it means? Those who do not may rejoice for you have learned a new word, which is something you don’t do every day unless you are some kind of a nut.
The Devil’s Dictionary defines Bastinado as…
The act of walking on wood without exertion.
I myself have never found walking on wood exerting, yet maybe “in those days,” it was?
In any event, I am sure that eating a bagel will ease the effort.
As such it seems a fitting “Third word.”
My curiosity was disturbed, (Although I was not, so don’t call me that,) and I decided to consult a more typical dictionary. This is what I found…
To beat with a stick, cane, etc., especially on the soles of the feet.
Once again this seems to be a practically of days gone by. I do not recall anyone being beaten on the bottoms of their feet recently?
I’m thinking we have found a beautiful word that has lost it’s meaning.
Somebody should Re-Define the word so we may use it in modern text. I am no WordSmith but I should like to give it a try.
If we break it down we find “Bas,” or Bass, what is a Bass?
A fish.
There we go! Many men today like to fish. Bastinado will appeal to them. Bastinaldo may become the act of beating a bass to death.
Once more better served while eating a bagel.
I seem to have drifted from the bagel topic and run out of time.
Maybe I’ll talk about bagels on another day?
