It is essential that all civilizations know how to read and write, or even draw, so events can be recorded.
Without keeping a record of events there is no reason to do them.

Someone amongst the recorders must have the capacity to recognize useless drivel. There is nothing more discouraging than reading redundant cave walls, “Yes, that’s another goat.”

The recorder must also be anatomically correct. Two arms, two legs, ten fingers, ten toes, one head, etc are seen as how things are. Less digits may indicate some sort of accident, or perhaps a savage encounter with a beast?

More digits than customary may indicate other things.
We have seen works with four fingers and toes. They are generally dismissed as being from beings not being from Earth.

It is generally hoped that the recorders be of an intelligence greater than the subjects, however that does not seem to be the case, as the drawings were not meant to be a record for the future, but rather merely something to do.
