Big Book
This was originally written for Loyd, yet revised so all may benefit.
Big Book Of Desert Travel
This is an excerpt I wrote for this book, which is still waiting to be picked up.
My only concern is payment, which I am still waiting to pick up.
Many of you desert travelers will find this interesting if not essential.
The ideal section for this excerpt would be the chapter entitled Crawling, which for some reason is near the end while it would be better served near the beginning.
Many look to crawling as a last resort when stranded or lost in the desert. I see it as a means to start ones journey once your vehicle has become disabled or stuck in the sand.
We say Crawl to the nearest oasis.
There is an oasis map at the end of this book. If not, someone stole it.
This should be done as quickly as possible, which would incite some to run.
This will last for a few steps at most.
Others will walk, then stagger, then sway, waver and stumble.
In all cases you will finally end up crawling, so you might as well start out that way so you will get good at it before your strength fails you.
Good sense is quintessential in the desert.
When you get there, ask for bacon.
Be sure you are not talking to those who/whom look at pigs as sacred.
Cows and bananas are one thing, but we cannot deal with pigs.
If they do, change the subject.
If they have bacon you will know that they are civilized, and probably not very old.
Ask for the American Embassy. If it is a big oasis there will probably be one there.
If not, you will need to crawl to the next one.
