Commentary on the Bush Administration

“Truth” is one of those virtues that we are all a little guilty about observing. Sometimes we tell “little white lies” in order not to hurt the feelings of others or say “next time” I won’t have that chocolate cake. But our small indiscretions never result in the deaths of man or animal, the destruction of the world’s ecosystems, the loss of cherished freedoms or the act of war.

Mr. Bush and his friends, however, view “truth” as a fluid commodity. Truth is as they define it. “We never torture,” “our intelligence gathering is always within the law,” “we know where the weapons of mass destruction are,” “the war in Iraq is being fought to protect our freedom and way of life,” "the war in Iraq is a war against terrorism." Our present government is perhaps the poorest in history in terms of honesty, ethics and acting for the good of its citizenry. I often wonder why President Clinton was brought to impeachment for telling one of those white lies about a relationship that was no ones business, when Bush continues to be protected by his party for crimes against humanity, crimes against nature and government for self profit.

With a “popularity” of 29%, Mr. Bush certainly has received a vote of non-confidence. His party’s acts to win the election through voter fraud, his party’s leadership being indicted and imprisoned on an ongoing basis, and his party’s failure to care for American victims of massive disaster all warrant this administrations removal from office.

I am amazed that Bush was reelected when so many people knew what was coming and knew of his lack of ethics. His refusal to acknowledge global warming and to sign the Kyoto Treaty because of the possible financial loss to the oil energy shows limited understanding, a failure to plan, a failure to invest in the world’s future. Any possible loss in today’s jobs would be more than made up for if the government invested in alternative fuels and transportation. If a farmer can produce his own fuel in his barn for pennies a gallon why can’t the government do the same? Why does Brazil have the ability to completely change its fuel technology to a cheap, effective and non-polluting and self-renewing system when the US is continuing to pump unlimited money into the fossil fuel industry?

Why does Bush continue to imprison people officially determined to be innocent in Guantanamo, holding them without charge, without legal assistance, without being allowd visits by the Red Cross, being systematically tortured? Why does America allow such behavior from its elected officials? What happened to America’s tradition of justice, personal freedom, and charity? Why does America allow the mass genocide that continues on the African continent? Why does America allow its leaders to continue to encourage strife by playing nation against nation, tribe against tribe, and, yes, religion against religion?

Bush’s environmental policies have pushed back any gains that were made over the last thirty years, thousands of species are dying, becoming extinct in front of our eyes with a “so what” attitude. I am ashamed of our government and I am ashamed that the American people have allowed these crimes to continue. What more destruction will Bush wage? How many more freedoms will we lose? How many more will die without cause and without a voice?
